Aquinas' Summa is massive and can easily tire the average reader; further, while analytic in nature, thus largely manageable for the interested reader, it does often slip into discussions that require an extensive knowledge of ancient and earlier medieval philosophy. Gratsch's work, Aquinas' Summa: An Introduction and Interpretation, helps when fatigue and perplexity set in. It is a superb introduction and guidebook through Aquinas' work. It helped me navigate the massive tome and to achieve a working knowledge of it in order to pass philosophy PhD comprehensive exams, but I would also utilize the book in undergraduate courses. It is not for the advanced scholar, but excellent for one who is interested in this seminal work.
