A.by YUNA HWANG"Maya and the Turtle," a timeless fairy tale from Korea, made its English debut in Los Angeles on Saturday August 18, 2012. Illustrator and co-author Soma Han and co-author, John Stickler signed and "chopped" copies of the new children's book from Tuttle Publishing at two venues in Koreatown -- The Korean Book Center in the Koreatown Plaza and the Pio Pico Koreatown Library.The book is dedicated to Soma's mother who heard the tale at her mother's knee and passed it on to Soma when she was a little girl. Soma Han Stickler has a degree in literature and a BA in Fine Arts from the California College of the Arts. She is a painter, sculptor, mosaic artist and book illustrator whose work has been exhibited in galleries around the U.S. Her husband, John Stickler, is a graduate of Yale University and spent time in Seoul reporting the news for the CBS radio network. He has written and contributed to nine books.Soma's first ever book," Tigers, Frogs and Rice Cakes", an illustrated collection of Korean proverbs, was put on the recommended list by the State Board of Education for use in California schools. "Maya and the Turtle", from Tuttle Publishing, is the second book produced by this husband-wife team. The first was a non-fiction picture book, "Land of Morning Calm: Korean Culture Then and Now." The 2003 title is still in print from Shen's Books and was among 11 titles selected by Skipping Stones Magazine for its 2005 Honor Award for multicultural books.Scholastic, the largest publisher of children's books in the world, hosts Book Fairs in schools across the country every August-September.
