I purchased this book for our 1st grade GLAD reindeer unit. It was perfect. Each page does a good job introducing/explaining about different reindeer facts. Great photos of the split hooves, babies, lichen, herds, fur, antlers, etc. Not too expensive either.
As an librarian in an elementary school, I am often asked for non-fiction books that supplement fiction stories. Reindeer is a common request and I will have to order multiple copies to serve all the teachers and students who want to read it. It has just enough information so that K-1 kids can comprehend, and 2-3 grade kids can read it themselves and learn some facts about Reindeer. GREAT book!
I'm a second grade teacher and this was a great read aloud for our reindeer themed unit. Only wish I had ordered more copies to use in small groups. The photographs illustrate the text and vocabulary terms very well. The facts were presented at just the right level for my age group. It really helped my students understand the "real" wildlife facts about reindeer compared to the magical ones they already know about.
An excellent book! It also shows other "cold" weather animals, the pictures are great and their are many vocabulary words that the children can learn. We had many discussions during the month of December about Reindeer.
Not too many non-fiction reindeer books available right now and this is ok. I can't remember exactly the detail, but my memory tells me sometimes the text doesn't always match the photos and I wish there were captions with each graphic.
I used this as a non-fiction intro for a unit on reindeers for Christmas. This gave my kids just the right amount of information and the pictures were wonderful.
This is a great book to teach elementary students about reindeer. It's easy to understand and has good photographs. I am glad I bought it.
The perfect book to introduce expository writing in my 1st grade class!
