The Dead Sea Scrolls Rediscovered: An Updated Look At One Of Archeology's Greatest Mysteries
Ebooks Online

While providing a comprehensive introduction to the Dead Sea Scrolls, this book also takes a fresh look at many controversial questions: Why were the scrolls written? Are they prophetic? How are they related to Christianity and Judaism? Stephen Hodge tells the amazing story of their discovery in 1947 as well as the historical drama being played out at the time they were written 2,000 years ago. Most significantly, he draws on fresh evidence on the subject of authorship and explores emerging theories. Unbiased and accessible, this book includes 8 pages of color photos and provides a riveting account of one of the most widely debated archaeological finds of the last century.

The Dead Sea Scrolls Revisited was a great read. I had a cursory knowledge of the Dead Sea Scrolls, meaning I understood that they were the remnants of an Essene library outside of Jerusalem and that they supported the Bible's credibility. I now understand how ignorant I was.The book is an easy read and divided very logically, although it comes to an abrupt end. It's obviously the work of a scholar and not a novelist. From this work I gained an understanding about the documents themselves, the uncertainty about the community that kept them and got some perspectives on Christianity that I would never have gleaned from Christian authors.

From other reviews I expected this to be a complicated stuffy scholarly book. I was pleasantly surprised that it does not assume you know anything about the Dead Sea Scrolls or ancient history either. It describes the discovery of the scrolls, gives a short but interesting synopsis of the historical background of the general period when the scrolls were deposited. It goes on to explain what we know about the scrolls and discusses the various conflicting theories about who owned or authored the scrolls. To make things even more clear and concise, the author has a chart giving chronological events as well as a glossary that gives precise definitions of terms many of us take for granted, but which may have had a special meaning for the community that preserved the Dead Sea Scrolls. It includes a bibliography of full translations of the scrolls into English. I think this was an easy read, very objective and enjoyable as well as informative.

Our friend is a history buff and really liked this book. It contains, in one book, the information that is scattered all over regarding the dead sea scrolls.
