Lydia Clark, thirty-four-year-old spinster school mistress, has resigned herself to finding fulfillment with her parents, job, and relationship with Jesus Christ. Suddenly she seems to be the object of affection by two men, both of whom do not interest her at all. Widowed Mr. Towly, old and unattractive, makes no bones about the fact that he needs a mother for his children and someone to take care of his home. Harold Sanders, crude and uneducated, does everything he can think of to attract Lydia, and, in doing so, finds himself attracted to someone else. When Lydia does finally begin to fall in love, it is with archeologist Jacob, who is desperately in love with novelist Miss Rawlins, and only wants Lydia to help him understand her books. Meanwhile, love is also blossoming with other Gresham residents; Paul Treves has finally gotten over his broken heart from book 2, and finds himself attracted to Mrs. Somerville, mysterious newcomer in Gresham. Widowed Mrs. Meeks finds herself attracted to a neighborly young man, only to realize that she can never marry him because he is an unbeliever. Noelle Somerville, who is frantically trying to run from her past and restore her relationship to God at the same time, has made up her mind never to wed a vicar, but is nevertheless hopelessly attracted to one. Love is even showing itself among the teenage set, as Laurel Phelps receives love poems from Ben Mayhew. Once again, Blackwell has woven together many different stories of the residents of Gresham, uniting them all with the steadying advice and presence of Andrew and Julia Phelps and the unconditional love and free gift of grace from Jesus Christ. Superb addition to this wonderful series!
What a wonderful series! Lawana Blackwell captures real feelings and pens them perfectly. A must read even if you haven't read the other two. I even laughed out loud a few times, along with feeling the character's pain. Can't wait for a fourth to see who and what develops next!
After reading the first two novels in the Gresham Chronicles series I eagerly awaited and was blessed to find that The Dowry of Miss Lydia Clark was equally as enjoyable. The characters immediately draw you in and you come to find that life just might be a little better if we all lived in Gresham. The reader becomes so engaged in the lives of the quirky characters, that I found myself laughing out loud and then crying with joy for the blessings that eventually always find their way to the tender hearts of the people of Gresham. I am anxious for the next novel as I ponder in my mind what exactly is in store for those people I have come to know as well as my own neighbors!!
"Finally, a heroine who's not necessarily beautiful!" That may sound like a strange sentiment from a devoted fan of romance, but books like this offer hope to those of us who aren't exactly models. By the way, I'm not classing this as just another romance, because the Gresham Chronicles are so much more than just romance novels. Read this book and I guarantee you'll enjoy more than just the incidental love stories. For example, if the story of Vicar Phelps and the fig bread doesn't make you smile, you're taking life way too seriously! Intrigued? Well, you'd better read the book!
This the third in the Gresham Chronicles series and so far the best. Plan to read the fourth soon! Lawana Blackwell is an amazing writer! She has the gift of being able to pull the reader into the story and make her/him feel as if she/he is there (or at least watching a movie and not reading a book)! I highly recommend this series! Do start with the first book, however. The stories will have much more meaning.
This is the third in a series about the people in the village of Gresham. Vicar Andrew and Julia have been married for over a year. We continue to watch as the lives of their family and friends change. The focus of the romance is on Miss Lydia Clark, headmistress of the secondary school. The eldest Sanders brother tries to court her, while a young widow and her children inspire him to better himself. The young archeologist who lodges at the Larkspur Inn is conflicted on which lady he most admires. Curator Paul Treeves recovers from his heartbreak over Elizabeth and learns from his experience. We also see the married lives of Mercy and Seth, Elizabeth and Jonathan and Squire and Mrs.(Kingsley) Bartley.By far the most interesting relationship has to do with the newest lodger at the Inn. Noelle deceitfully comes there appearing to be the young widow of a war hero. Her past is much more scandalous and she eventually confesses it to the vicar and his wife. They assist her but she is tempted again. Which choice will she make? This is a story of grace that would have been a very big deal during that time period.
I love this series! I was first introduced with prime book of month and after I finished that I bought the next three for my kindle. I would recommend the series to anyone. I love reading English historical fiction and this fit right into my tastes. I enjoy learning about more characters with each book and to see other characters grow.
As I neared the end of this book I began to be sad for thinking of not continuing in the lives of the Gresham folks! This book made me laugh and smile a lot! Love the characters!Looking forward to the next book!
