This is an absolutely lovely and well depicted story about homeschooling! I am so very pleased to own this and cannot wait to share it with my children. I am confident they will love seeing their lives reflected so accurately and so well in this story...right down to the never ending messy house. The author is a homeschool graduate who beautifully recalls the joy of homeschooling while making sure to include some of the hardships (a tired (and sometimes grumpy) Mama for instance!). The story explains how homeschooling is not so much about staying in our homes, but using the world as our classroom (and every room in our homes!). Instead of justifying homeschooling by portraying the negatives of public/private school, he effortlessly shows so many of the reasons so many of us homeschool. The illustrations are a little busy for my preference, but I think my kids will enjoy discovering "hidden" items in each page.I think this is an excellent addition to any homeschool family's library, as well as a potential great gift for grandparents and doubting relatives or friends.Thank you to this author...it is perfect!!
Jonathan Bean has done it! He captured the messy, joyful, sometimes tiring, colorful, adventure of homeschooling in this new arrival to my home-library. Upon opening our new book (with high-quality binding and paper, by the way), my oldest son and I giggled and grinned our way through dozens of close-to-home vignettes. Especially the spread that shows all the reasons Teacher Mom gets tired! We were delighted to look at this book alongside Bean's earlier book, Building Our House. Appropriate to its topic, the earlier book featured tidy, detailed illustrations of the technical steps for building a house by hand. This new book features more of the author/illustrator's cheerful ink drawings filled with colorful paint, but takes a more coloring-outside-the-lines, childlike, excited approach. There are so many details to explore with each reading. Homeschooling families will enjoy seeing bits and pieces of their world featured in a picture book. Those attending traditional schools will have a peek at homeschool life, but will also make connections with their own learning-life adventures!
So lovely to have book about Homeschooling for the whole family to enjoy. Although a simple homeschool reflection, the illustrations add so much more. What a lovely tribute to the family, love, chaos, work and beauty of Homeschooling. Both mom and the kids can relate to the illustrations.
We loved this book. It showed a family of six (four children) learning at home. As another reviewer pointed out, there isn't a big story arc, as it was more a child explaining how school worked at his home. The book is messy and beautiful, just like home schooling.
This is an absolutely adorable book. We homeschool our children and this is such a realistic representation of what that looks like on a daily basis. My 3rd grader loves reading it to his siblings and they all love for me to read it. Story has a nice rhythm and the illustrations are phenomenal. Great book and will be giving it as a gift to my homeschooling friends.
This beautiful book is bursting at the seams with light and life. The illustrations are just the kind children love: lively, detailed, and packed with hidden treasures. Home-schoolers will of course find many points of contact, but this isn't just a book for them. It's for any parent who believes that the home is the natural starting-point of a child's bottomless curiosity.
This picture book is all about a little boy that is homeschooled. It follows his family and show how they live and learn!I was so excited to see this book! I have never seen a picture book that focused on the life of a homeschool family. My kids and I saw our learning lifestyle on each and every page! I feel like this book will really reach out and show other what homeschooling really is all about and give it a more positive light.
This is a nice book that shows how a home can also be used as a school (homeschool). The book shows several rooms in the home that are used for various home-activities, and also how they are used for a classroom. The pictures are detailed and colorful. A nice book for homeschool kids to have that helps them relate their home to a classroom.
