I'm a little disappointed but I should have double checked the dimensions. When you think encyclopedia, you imagine a heavy book. So, to my dismay, when I opened up the shipping box I discovered that the book was about the size of my hand. I showed this book to my family and they even laughed at it. As an artist, I wanted this book for reference. You'd think a book that prominently displays VISUAL in its title would be better suited in a large format. Especially considering the subject matter. I've flipped through the pages and see that the images are quite beautiful but it's a shame that it's contained in such a small book. I am not reviewing this book on content but rather the presentation of the material. This is a review to warn others who had similar expectations.
Purchased this book for my seven-year-old son. Althought it's not specifically a children's book, it was PERFECT for him because it has so much information on each particular dinosaur--a page or two on each. It is now so worn from use that I may be buying another copy. By far his favorite dinosaur book.
Although this is a small book, it's thick and chock full of dinosaurs. What's really great is it isn't jut you t-Rex and raptor stuff it's much more in depth. There are plenty of ones you probably have never even heard of, let alone have facts about their size and qualities. This book is more suitable for older kids but one to read at bedtime until they are olderLots of stuff very hard to find online easily.
My 9 year old grand daughter had checked this book out from our local library so many times that I wanted her to have her own copy. For a dinosaur lover, this book is the most comprehensive book on the subject that a person could want or need. It is by far the best dinosaur book ever published. EVER. The particular version that I purchased was a small...probably about 5"x6" and 2' thick. The version from the library was a standard about 8 1/2" x 11" but my granddaughter really likes her small one...says 'It's SO cute!'. Even tho I bought it used through , it was in perfect condition. The price was about as good a bargain as a person could want.
excellent booki have a 4 year old and a nine year old and i had to buy a second copy they love it so much
We saw this little book at the Journey Museum in Rapid City, SD and knew we had to have a copy. They didn't sell it, but did! The book includes just about everything a person (young or old) could want to know about dinosaurs, and the graphics are second to none, IMHO. The cover dimensions are small, but don't be fooled - it is about three inches thick!
Unless you are a professional paleontologist, you will learn quite a bit from this compact volume. Photos and illustrations pack this book, which can be read cover to cover or can just sample random entries. Highly recommended. DK has another hit.
I read all the reviews on several of these books and settled on this one. It turned out to be be not what I was looking for, which shows how difficult it can be to select a book and how useless a review can be. The book is nice, so we will keep it, but in case someone else is in this position, maybe my opinion will help. My son is four and he began really loving dinosaurs, so I thought we would get an encyclopedia-type text with many more that he could see and learn about than just our little dino book. What we need is an alphabetized, user-friendly book with all the dinosaurs and a sketch of each one. Also a phonetic pronunciation would be nice. This book is organized by period (triassic, jurassic, cretaceous, etc), which is just too confusing for us at our level of learning. Using the index is cumbersome for look ups, would be nice to just flip to the letter, etc. Some dinos have no drawings or just skeletons. He likes to see the actual beast.
