My son who usually doesn't like to sit in one place very long, actually read the book for a stretch of an hour without any dangling carrots! I strongly recommend this book for any home library. The book is organized by subject groups, ie birds, fish, plants, worms, etc. The pages are full of clear and short descriptions(just right for elementary school children), and wonderful pictures of the animals/insects in action. I found myself reading it with equal enthusiasm. It is a great introduction to the living creatures around us.
There is a lot of information in this book covering a lot of subjects, from spiny anteaters to centipedes, stingrays to pheasants. There is also an entire section devoted to evolution, where they discuss microevolution to explain why macroevolution would be true (but not in those terms). For those who don't believe that certain animal species are hundreds of millions of years old this is quite off-putting. There is no mention of macroevolution being a theory.
I needed this as part of our homeschool curriculim( it goes along w/ Living Learning( a Science program-awesome BTW!!!) from Rainbow Resources), and have been very impressed! Great pics on every page, colorful and attention grabbing. My 5yr old loves looking through it and asking about the various animals.
This book was recommended to me by homeschoolers as a basic reference guide to compliment lessons in biology. The pictures are colorful and detailed, and inspire great questions from my two children. It only has a basic overview of a cross section of the creatures pictured. I recommend using other sources to get more detailed information. The children are genuinely interested in the insects and animals pictured and we plan on using it in our lessons. We have been using for two weeks.
bought this to use for science schoolwork. My kids love the Usborne books for their wonderful pictures and detailed information.
