I am a father of four kids eight and under. So I read to them a lot. As far as religious kids' books, I like books that tell the old, old story well in a way that is both age appropriate and compelling. The Garden, the Curtain, and the Cross is a great book. It gives kids age five to eight (my test group) a big picture sense of why Jesus died and rose again. Author Carl Laberton tells a story which is accessible for my kids and true to scripture. His story is beautifully illustrated by Catalina Echeverri's stunning illustrations. On the first day I got this book, I already read it several times with my kids. It opened up a great conversation with my eight year old about what the Bible tells about sin and we loved talking about what was happening in the pictures.t5garden_medium3d-g7wvjnz5osg52qzrnorvrq67frvh6m4zHere is a brief synopsis of the book [spoiler alert]: It begins in the garden where there was nothing bad, ever and there was no one sad. . . ever. And best of all God was there. Unfortunately the people did a terrible thing and decided they wanted a world without God in charge. Because of their sin, God sent them out of the garden and put warrior angels in front of it like a big KEEP OUT sign. People still kept sinning because they didn't want God in charge. God wanted to remind people how wonderful it was to live with him, so he had his people build a temple. In the center of the temple was the wonderful place where God was. But around that wonderful place was a curtain with pictures of warrior angels—God's big keep out sign telling them that because of their sin, they couldn't come in. After hundreds of years God sent his son as a person (Jesus) to open the way to God's wonderful place. The people put Jesus on a cross.
Too often when children are taught Bible stories, two problems arise. The first issue is children are taught the Bible apart from the greater context, namely the narrative of redemption in both the Old and New Testament. Secondly, these Bible stories fail to point to the need for salvation in Christ alone, rather calling for a morality of “do this but don’t do that” and “be like him but not the other guy”. That is why I am grateful for The Good Book company and why I am excited to share with you Carl Laferton’s The Garden, The Curtain and The Cross. Laferton succinctly shows how the stories of Scripture are weaved together and ultimately find their fulfillment in the gospel of Jesus Christ. The Garden, The Curtain and The Cross is essential a biblical theology book for children. Parents may very well learn from this simple book. Carl Laferton is faithful to the narrative of redemption, revealing God as the holy Creator. Not falling into the trap of morality minus the cross, Laferton points to how sin is what separates us from God and sin is first and foremost against God. Instead of saying to just do better, he points to how the Bible tells us we cannot save ourselves and the truth is Christ is the answer and the only answer. In The Garden, The Curtain and The Cross, fellowship with God, the fall of man, and the forgiveness of God are all highlighted. To the point, The Garden, The Curtain, and The Cross by Carl Laferton is an essential storybook for every Christian parent with young children. If you are a parent and have children from 3-6 years old, then this Bible storybook is a must-buy for you. This does not mention the attention-capturing illustrations by Catalina Echeverri. Simply put, I wholeheartedly recommend you buy this book!
The Garden, the Curtain and the Cross: The True Story of why Jesus died and Rose Again by Carl Laferton shares the gospel in a children’s book format. The colorful pictures by Catalina Echeverri depict Adam, Eve and the temple along with black, gray and white pictures for the pages dealing with sin and Jesus’ death on the cross. I appreciated that an all Caucasian cast of characters was not evident which is not always the case in other children’s Bible stories. Different skin tones are used throughout which makes it perfect for children of all nationalities. The book begins in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve. Sin is defined as not doing what God says to do and wanting a world without Him in charge.“God wanted people to remember: It is wonderful to live with him…but because of your sin, you can’t come in.”The temple curtain is explained as a “Keep Out” sign separating the people from the presence of God because of their sin. Then Jesus is introduced as the one who never sinned. The One who had always planned to die on the cross for our sin and when he died on the cross the “Keep Out” sign had been ripped. He was brought back to life by God, making a way for us all to live with Him forever. This book is filled with great teaching moments for parents to engage their children with the hopelessness of their sin and the hope of the gospel. I read this book to two of my little friends one three and the other five. They listened attentively to the story and enjoyed pointing things out on the pages. They gave the book a thumbs up along with their parents.Reading this book during Easter time is a wonderful opportunity to remind children of the real meaning of Easter.
