I bought this book so my children could learn about other religions. I recently took a college Religions of the World class and I used this book throughout my class. It simplified complex religions and made them easier for me to understand. The internet links are great. There were many wonderful sites that make it fun to learn. I will definately buy more books from this series for my children.
I'm a high school social studies teacher and encountered USBorne books at a teacher workshop. They are very informative and vibrant texts. The internet-linked versions are wonderful. They include numerous links that accessed through the USBorne website, not the book. This allows for dead links to be eliminated and new links to be added (even more than are mentioned in the book). The pictures are wonderful, colorful, and some illustrations can even be downloaded for classroom use. I'm very happy with this book and use it in the classroom.
This book is great for young people. They cover a lot of different traditions, including some Indigenous traditions and African diasporic religions. The book expresses complex concepts in a simplified form making it easy for young readers. I am using in a Middle School religion class. Additionally, the book has linked to relevant Internet sites which is a plus. So far, this is my favorite children's world religion text.
I purchased this book because I wanted an overview of the main world religions. This book did not disappoint. Each of the religions is covered in a sensitive way and gives the main philosophies and beliefs behind the religion. My only complaint is now that my appetite is whetted, I feel I want more detail! The religions covered include Hinduism, Sikhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Buddhism. Other religions are covered in less detail and native and ancient religions are briefly brushed upon. The version I had was an internet-tie-in, where links were given for more information (links are maintained and updated at the parent site). What this book did for me was to confirm my own belief that we all believe in the same things, but we just call them different names. Sad that we all just can't see that and live together peacefully.
I bought this to explain world religions to my 2 year old son, when he starts asking those questions... Most adults are impressed that I have it my collection of books for him and when any adult opens it, they become engrossed in the words and illustrations. More than one person has told me they've learned a few things from this book.
This book includes many lovely images that help to illustrate the many beliefs people hold around the world. The text is concise and easy to understand and covers a nice introduction to each of the covered religions. I am using it with my son (second grade) for social studies and we have enjoyed it. There are a few religions I would have liked to see covered here, but the book does have a fairly nice selection. I also like that it doesn't feel biased toward one belief system, and has a similar amount of info for several of the more common religions.Overall I think this book is great, and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to give their child a basic introduction to the religions of the world. My son is a bright seven-year-old and I haven't had any trouble with him understanding the text (I read it aloud and we discuss) and he enjoys the pictures very much. I think children much younger than him might find it difficult, but I imagine older children would enjoy it as well.
Excellent book and resource for introduction to religions of the world, and comparative relations. The internet links are amazingly helpful. Great for homeschooling and for those wanting to expand their knowledge of world religions.
This is an attractive book that answers a lot of questions kids might have about religions. I am returning it, however, after reading the following paragraph in the introduction about the Future of Religion(p. 11): "Some people feel that, within the richer, developed countries of the world, religion has lost some of its importance. They believe that some people in these societies are becoming more and more obsessed with making money, and gaining material possessions, and that they have abandoned many of their religious ideals. Over the world as a whole, though, religions are growing. In addition, some experts predict that there will be a swing away from this materialist outlook and that people will turn back to the more spiritual values of religion."This idealization of religion as a force for good in the world is completely unwarranted. So-called "religious ideals" cause terrorists to kill thousands of innocent victims every year. Priests molest children and get away with it. Remember the Crusades and the Inquisition? And while it is true that countries whose populations tend to be less superstitious also happen to be wealthier, this does not mean that people who are not religious are therefore materialistic by any means. I could go on, but I won't. This is just an alert to let free-thinking parents know that this book has a clear bias, and they might want to pass on purchasing it.I don't want any child exposed to this rubbish, least of all my daughter, and so I'm returning this book today.
