This is an excellent study for everyone, whether you are interested in the place of women in the church, Jewish or other ancient cultures, Greek or Hebrew exegesis, or church history. The book may look uninviting at first because of the type, but it has paragraph headings and a terrific index that enables you to dip into it anywhere your curiosity leads, and hook you into reading the whole thing. If you are traditionally minded and committed to Biblical authority, this is especially for you. This is an old book from 1923. Bushnell felt called to preach but didn't believe women were allowed to. She insisted God show her in the Bible that it was ok. This study was the result. While her conclusions are good, you may not agree with every interpretation she gives. There are some better explanations of some of Paul's passages about women in more modern books, but Bushnell really shines in her study of Genesis and ancient cultures. Here is info you won't easily find anywhere else unless it is quoted from her. This book will be appreciated most by those interested in looking at the big picture instead of 'straining at gnats.' Remember to always interpret Bible passages according to the context of the whole story of Israel and the Early Church -- in which women are always treated as having individual rights and value by God and godly people. (See especially Dorothy Sayers' humorous but pointed little book 'Are Women Human?
I haven't finished reading this book yet, and it's not normal practice for me to give something a full review until I've finished it but I felt compelled in this particular instance. As a Christian one of my biggest struggles has been, "the woman question." I couldn't understand why God would create an entire gender just to have them be opressed by the church and society. It's something I still struggle in as I haven't found a complete answer, and it's something that will probably take years for me to finally find my answer to.But I digress. This book was my first introduction to really delving into "the woman question" and it's been an incredible journey thus far. My husband taught me a very wise exercise in regards to discernment (I tend to be very impressionable) where before you read any book you research the author first to see where exactly their coming from and if it's a truthful place. Meaning, are there any unsavory scandals attached to them that would cause one to question their validity. I researched Katherine Bushnell as well as the GWTW website and what they had to offer. Based off of my understanding of Scripture and character they were sound.First, Katherine Bushnell did some incredible things in her life in regards to liberating women from men taking complete and utter advantage of them. She got the state of Wisconsin to pass a law to protect women from becoming sex slaves after proving a particular mill was doing so. She also did some very good works in India and China in regards to the same unsavory practices were being done towards women. I believe she never married as there's no mention of a family or husband, and it seems she lived a life similar to Paul where she was completely devoted to Christ, and He did incredible things through her.
