I picked this book off of my sister's shelves thinking I was going to be in for a good read. I was so, so wrong.This book is all about how women should change themselves to please men. Dove encourages her readers to go to charm school instead of college to learn how to be good little wives. She also stresses the importance of knowing how to cook and cleaning, insinuating that a woman who can't do either is unlovable and worthless. The book also says that women need to marry a man who is both smarter and stronger than they are so they can be adequately "protected".Do NOT, under any circumstances, give this book to your daughter/niece/friend/whomever. It's a load of misogynistic rubbish that will only pollute her mind and wreck her self-esteem. If you want her to read good Christian books, have her read C.S. Lewis's "The Chronicles of Narnia"--they have both a good Christian message and will encourage girls to be smart, strong, and capable like the women in the story.
This is the WORST book for young women and men to read. These are completely false ideas. Please don't read this book. I really hope girls have more self respect than Dove's ideal woman.
I didn't realize that girls weren't allowed to have personalities. Or that it was 1950. Feel free to let your daughters read this book if you want them to lose their self-respect.
Interesting how all the positive reviews commend Grace Dove on what a great author she is (every single one mentions her by name). Maybe make it a little less obvious that you're writing your own reviews? The people writing negative reviews are right. This book is misogynistic garbage that fails to realize the 1950s are over. It teaches women that having a unique identity is bad, just conform to gender roles and be useful to your man.
I want to commend Grace on a wonderful insight. I have no daughters of my own, only boys and they read it and agreed with almost everything. (Some boys have different points of view on the competition aspect)I have also passed my book onto many girls that I am in contact with and have noticed a improvement on the way they look, act and carry themselves. Even as a mother of two and very happy in my marriage, I have found some of the passages that she quotes are useful in my life.Thank you Grace for opening up a door that some would prefer to remain shut.
This is potentially the worst book I've ever seen that still has the potential to influence how women see relationships and men in general. If parents want their daughter to be a mindless slave to the archaic notions of subservience to man and "changing oneself to be more likable!", then by all means, run out and force feed this trash down your daughter's throat. If you want to raise an actual human being, give them a decent book to read that gives them insight into actual humanity, instead of this garbage that teaches them what bunch of Christian dinosaurs think they should be.
This book has had a positive effect on me. When I was in junior high, I was very cruel. I also grew up in a house (and neighborhood, and church) full of opinionated, strong-willed women, so naturally I was one myself. As I moved into high school I was popular with the girls, and yet I had no idea how to relate to guys - I'd chased them all away with my arrogance and feminism. Mrs. Dove's book was a breath of fresh air, each page like a conversation between her and me, and it really felt like she'd helped me restore my femininity in a way that didn't diminish my personality.I'm saddened by the negative reviews this book has received. Most of them don't even seem to be coming from Dove's intended readership - girls like me, with a feministic background that has negatively affected how we relate to guys. [And on that note, as someone who has been deeply entrenched in that world, I would like to say this: Feminism is not liberating. It's just as confusing, and just as miserable as male chauvinism, which I don't think Dove is advocating in the least. I get where these readers who posted negative reviews are coming from. And I know how much they love the girls around them and want to protect and empower them as much as possible. But they don't need to protect their girls from Dove's writing. She chose her words carefully and graciously when she wrote this book.] I'm in college now and have recommended this book to many girls who have found this book just as refreshing as I have. I hope it continues to touch many more lives in the same way it did mine.
I was 14 when I begged my dad to buy it for me and it completely changed my perspective about everything pertaining to who I was in Christ, how I should carry myself as a Godly woman, and how to treat the opposite sex. I must have read it a dozen times since then for the past 10 years and I can say I am living proof that Grace Dove is a genius and an amazing role model. I am married and serving the Lord and a lot of the things my husband loves about me were taught to me long ago by this treasure. I recommend it! Highly!
