There are books that rock your world and, once or twice in a lifetime, there are books that turn your world completely and irretrievably upside down. 'The God Jesus Knew' is a life-changing, pivotal book for the times we live in today. It is a scholarly but very readable book, written with humor and humanity.I came to Christianity through being involved in a serious car accident. As blood flowed from my wounds, I began the journey of accepting the One who history told me willingly allowed Himself to be sacrificed for me. Prior to that I was a bit turned off by Christianity. As a vegetarian and animal-lover, I found the whole sacrificial, washed in the blood stuff off-putting and distasteful. I remember a letter to a vegetarian magazine that included a photo of a butcher's van outside a vicarage. The local butcher was delivering meat to the vicar. The van displayed the hung corpses of pigs and cows. The letter writer - not a Christian - said he never would be ... he had expected more compassion from the church that allegedly preached love, compassion, and peace. He had a good point.I learned, over the years, to keep my hurt and my opinions to myself. In the UK, where I am from, between 5 and 10% of the population is vegetarian or vegan. Caterers told me that they usually cater to 10% vegetarian/vegan. The church is the same but they are generally the quiet ones, the ones who don't talk about their compassionate beliefs because they go so against the grain. I met a Jewish vegetarian who felt the same. We are treated as somehow lacking and unenlightened - oh the irony!I wasn't expecting anything that fit in with those beliefs when I picked up this spiritual book. But I am on a journey of discovery and the book jumped off the virtual shelves at me.
