Facts presented in an entertaining way that may appeal to an 11 or 12 year. Interesting facts and presentation of a potentially dry subject. It covers the early history of money, the banking system, the business of money, the Federal Reserve, the Euro, & how to earn, save, and invest money.
Both my 8 year old and my 10 year old have enjoyed picking up this book and reading it on their own. My husband and I, and my mom also have enjoyed perusing through it. It covers everything having to do with money. It's rather fascinating.
I bought this along with a bank for my 9 year old grand daughter. After looking at it I felt it was too wordy and too complicated for a young elementary child to latch onto. I put it away for later.
I have two girls 8 & 10 and it is about time they get to know the value of money. I looked into several different books before purchasing this one. I am glad this is the one I bought.
I bought this for my nephew's 10th birthday, because he's been showing some interest in money and in entrepreneurial endeavors. He's not necessarily a big reader, so I wasn't really sure how this would go over, but it seems to have held his interest for some months now and he does seem to have a better grasp of money math. I read the reviews before I bought it and was a little concerned that one mentioned that the book discusses gambling, so when I received the book I read it to make sure it was appropriate. While gambling is mentioned, it isn't something that comes up repeatedly in this book, or that is presented in a particularly positive light - so it doesn't seem to me that this book is likely to encourage him to gamble or make him think it's a good option... In any case I'm sure his parents will discuss that subject with him at some point, it's not as if it's a taboo topic. The page says this book is for ages 7 to 12, but I think it's a little "young" for a 12 year old, and if I were purchasing for a child that age I probably would have selected a book that's geared toward teens.
This book doesn't provide any magical methods to get kids interested in learning about finances and understanding why saving makes sense, but it does provide a number of useful exercises that can make the process a lot easier.
I would have given this book 5 stars. Except for one sentence - page 66:"How grown-ups earn money.... Luck. Some people win money by playing the lottery."Appalling. People have enough trouble not wasting their money on gambling, without having it RECOMMENDED to them.
In continuing with her reading and educational growth, I decided to purchase this book for my granddaughter because she has a very inquisitive mind. She absolutely loves it and loves to talk about what she has learned from it.
