Even though I'm 65, I'd never read this book, so when I ordered several copies for our local Christian school, I bought an extra one for myself. It was much more insightful about the feelings involved in the minds of soldiers in battle than I was anticipating in a children's book. As the mother of two children in the military, I couldn't help but think that circumstances change, but what soldiers of every generation must struggle with in their minds doesn't much. It's not so terribly graphic, as a lot of today's literature, as to make it unsuitable for young readers, but I would think Junior High age and up would pick up more on the nuances of what's going on in the mind of Henry (the main character). I would recommend it for readers of any age, even senior citizens.
This book has been on my radar for a long time and I finally made it my business to read it. The Red Badge of Courage deals with a young man named Henry Fleming who is in the Union Army during the Civil War. It's the story of his internal struggles between cowardice and bravery. The book as originally published was edited down in size from a larger manuscript which was here restored as best as possible. There are also some end notes. So for those two reasons I recommend reading this "restored" Signet version. The story is 24 chapters and in my Signet copy was about 125 pages. I thought it was pretty good at describing one man's internal struggle. There are some battle scenes (I didn't count them). I found some of the writing to be a bit on the descriptive side so sometimes I had to reread paragraphs to get the details straight (it didn't help that most of my reading is done while commuting so sometimes it's hard to concentrate). There are also four other short stories included. These were all very good, to very, very good. Definitely worth reading. Surprisingly, and sadly, Crane died at only 28 years old. It's hard to believe that such a young man wrote some of these stories.
This classic is a little choppy at times, but i am convinced it gives you a feeling for what it must have been like to be a civil war soldier. This book was required reading in schools at one time.
I purchased these books for the middle school. I recall reading this book when I was in 7th grade and how it had such an impact where war is not glamorous. These type books are true classics.
i tip my ferora everytime i see this book. it brings a tear to my eye. i ate too many doritos and drank too much mtn dew last night and almost died but then i saw this book and somehow managed to survive.
This was a gift to my Grandson. He said he enjoyed it very much. I read it when I was a boy and thought he would like it.
Better read as an adult. Wasted on Jr. High kids.
