Grade 5-8-Joining a crowded field, this cheerful treatment of personal finance will hold its own despite some cutesy, cartoonlike color illustrations. After a brief history of money, McGillian covers the usual topics-budgeting, earning, spending, saving, etc.-with effective ideas for resisting consumerism. Oddly, an afterword on the adoption of the euro is included. The writing is clear and lively; even the good advice is less schoolmarmish than usual. Books on this topic abound; the best one is still Neale S. Godfrey's Ultimate Kids' Money Book (S & S, 1998), which has better illustrations.
