Paulsen has written one of the funniest books we've ever read, about preparing for and racing in the Iditarod. Like all the best humorists, his humor comes from the heart. This book is much more serious but it still comes from the heart and succeeds for that reason. Here he is writing about his dogs and in particular a dog named Cookie, a female who served as his lead dog in the Iditarod and also was mother to many of his other dogs. He starts with the birth of her last litter of pups and goes on from there. Some of the most striking anecdotes show just how intelligent and sensitive these animals are: one of the other dogs teaching the puppies how to get all of the meat out of the skull, and Cookie herself seemingly forcing a pack of dogs to go back and help her owner when he has to let all of them go in order to extricate himself from a predicament. In the end, they both have to give up running, and of course humans live longer than dogs, so we know how it ends: sadly but poignantly, as the author says goodbye to someone he obviously considers a friend.
This is a great book. It's about a man who owns a dog kennel. He loves the dogs more than life itself. But, he gets heart disese. He may have to give up the kennel. This is a drama that kept me interested. I don't usually read this type of book, so it had to be very good to interest me. I hope you like it.
This is a must read follow-up to Gary's book "Winterdance". You'll read more about his dog Cookie as well as a variety of other sled dog related adventures and observations. If you've ever bonded with a dog (dog musher or not) you will enjoy this little gem of a read. It is a book easily read in one sitting.
A must read for any dog lover or one who enjoys Gary Paulsen's work. The simple joy of the little balls of fur that are husky puppies is portrayed lovingly throughout the book, as you follow along with the birth, education, and growing up of the litter of Gary Paulsen's best and most wonderful lead dog, Cookie. Unfortunately, there comes sadness, as Gary is forced to give up the kennel he loved, and keep only Cookie as a reminder of the dogs he once had. In an amazingly short space of time, you will find yourself laughing hysterically, and sobbing, and anyone who reads this book without doing both at least once has no sence of humor and a heart of stone.
I read this to my nine year old last week. Before I knew it, my wife and twelve year old were rivited. It is beautiful and touching. Most books you put down and forget a day later. The images from this book stay with me and my family. We are going to run out and buy some more stories by this author. You do not have to love dogs or dogsledding to truly enjoy his writing. Suggestion: Read aloud by the fire.
If you love dogs you can't not like this book. It is short but it gives a little insight into the relationship between a man and his sled dog(s). I enjoyed the bits of information about the lifestyles of the dogs and, albeit limited information, it helped me understand the reason for chaining the dogs, which I have always been bothered with. I liked the admittance of our human limitations and the lessons learned by our canine companions.
I picked this book up in North Carolina, and I was skeptical on how it would be. I read the book and fell in love with it. Since then, I have read the book three more times. You'll fall in love with this book too. Some parts brought tears to my eyes, and others made me laugh. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did and still do.
At first I was very interested to read the book, the cover look very good, when I got to the middle at page 45 it was super good I like tell cookie the dog had lots of puppies I can just imagine 1 billion puppies crawling all over you. I have a puppy living with me he is a Labrador retriever named Casper, he is so cute but he is a monster, he ruins everything he rips stuff, And he loves to eat all of my toys and papers and homework and all that stuff. This book reminded me of all the the personalities of our puppy. I really did enjoy this book thank you for writing in it.👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍💫🌟✨😺😸🙈🙉😋😆😄😃😊😊☺️😉😜😝😛😜
