Confession time. I may be a grown up but I love reading YA books, particularly those, like this one, with a fantasy bias. I’ve read one of Cathy McGough's previous books and I loved it so I read this one first chance I got, and I loved it, too! I see it as a kind of coming of age story telling what happens when a 16 year old girl (she's a sweet girl and a maths whizz) and a high school jock are thrown together in a dystopian world where most of humanity has perished…two young people suddenly having to operate together like adults and get by in a world that has suddenly become very, very serious and very adult. Top stuff with really likeable characters and an utterly absorbing plot. Get this and I promise you, you won’t be disappointed.

Superior YA novel that throws together Grace, a geeky but lovable sixteen year old girl and Vincente a handsome, sporty lad. At first their relationship seems based on Vincente copying Grace’s maths homework (she’s got a genius for the subject) but things take a dystopian turn when humanity is decimated as its struck by catastrophe: the two teens are thrown together and must make sense of events, and survive, using brain, wit and bravery.Excellent writing and a cracking plot keep this novel moving along at a superb pace, and the events that unfold during the books course are fantastical but never lacking in credibility, I’d also say the same for the characters as you grow to firmly like them and really hope that every turns out well for them.Great book and highly recommended!

I don’ often read dystopian future genre, but I have two granddaughters who read it all the time. I loved the cover of this book and the title, and when I read the book description I decided to give it a try. I’m glad I did. It opened my eyes to another world of writing.I sat at my kitchen table and discussed the book with my youngest granddaughter who is 14 and her 12 year old cousin ( a boy who is very bright and mature.) They are teenagers and I am a senior, but we had a great discussion about the genre and the different books that they read, and my little gal will be borrowing grandma’s Kindle one day soon before school starts.I still have many questions—apart from the very active and sometimes human devouring trees—what happened to all the people? Where will this story line go next? Will Grace be more mathematically involved in the next book? Will she and Vincente find mature love by the end of the series? Because right now she could still be involved in her infatuation and he thinks he loves her—and since it seems that they are the only two people left on the planet, it’s a given that they will stick together. This was a very interesting read—even though I am far from a young adult. The characters were well developed, and I kept wondering if we would discover that her head injury had created a dream world that she seemed to be living in.The teenagers in my house say no. So I guess we have to read the next book in the series to find out what happens.A good book for all ages, aimed at the YA market. I recommend it to anyone.

"A Mathematical State of Grace" is a stunning novel on many levels. The one that stands out the most is just how great of a job Cathy McGough did in presenting readers with a totally original take on the tired dystopian future genre. There are so many book out there that use a bleak and dismal future as their premise, so many that it's been done to death. yet, I've read and heard so many good things about this novel that I had to check it out. Man, am I glad I listened and bought this. The prose is fresh and intelligent. The characters are thoroughly fleshed out and jump of the page as real people and seem like someone you might meet in real life.My personal favorite thing about the book is its focus on mathematics. I am a math geek. I can spend hours doing equations when others would be out destroying their brain cells at bars or parties. I take math courses just because I can. Yes, I really do.I gobbled this book up in no time at all and I am going to be getting my hands on Book Two ASAP.

The title and cover of this book caught my attention. The story is a solid read and the attention to detail - even the smallest detail - is what makes this book stand out.I had to laugh more than a few times since, as a retired school teacher, I noticed the author has teenagers pegged exactly in this book. In the beginning when Grace is tugging up her skirt to get to the shortest allowed length - you have no idea how many times I saw that in my classroom over the years - that action alone in the story showed me the great attention to detail.I think it is more important than ever to have books available for our youth to read that are truly interesting. While I know vampires have been ever so popular with kids - finding a story that focuses on a coming of age story blended really well with a dystopian theme was a delightful find. While the book is presented as a YA story, I think adults will also enjoy this story.

I do love my YA series and it seems to be getting harder and harder to find ones that are both original and well written. I feel as if I've hit the literary jackpot with author Cathy McGough's "A Mathematical State of Grace", the first in a new series. The story of Grace, an intelligent math whiz with a crush on the school jock, Vincente. An accident lands her in the hospital and brings her closer to Vincente as the world they know changes drastically. This was an incredible adventure that puts two teenagers in some harrowing circumstances and this is usually what makes a series like this great. The characters are being very well developed and I already care a great deal about them - so much so that I am counting the days until Book 2 is released. Well done.
