Okay, so maybe the title is a slight exaggeration, but not too much. I was looking up the precursor (Diary of a Wombat) to order a copy for my mother so she could read it to my nephews when I stumbled across this gem. I ordered myself a copy and if the original is a hit with the boys, then she will be getting a copy for her library soon enough. I, personally, loved this one almost as much as the first and would recommend it to anyone I know. I am 27 and have both books in my personal collection...no kids, it is just for me.
A delightful addition to the Wombat series, a fun easy read for beginners or story tellers, easy to elaborate on the emotions of a baby wombat's days of curiousity and wonder; in a ever changing world full of discovery and challenge. Perfect for that toddler to first grader who can relate to being wide eyed and ready for adventure and learning.
Mothball, the loveable, destructive wombat from “Diary of a Wombat” is back for another week. She has a baby. This time, the diary is from Baby’s point of view. I am wild about the pictures of Mothball and her Baby asleep and playing together. Cuteness doubled!Baby discovers a toddler nearby, and he is the perfect boredom-buster. He’s also helpful in the search for a new hole-home for the wombats. Home-hunting is so much fun for Baby. What a delightful, funny and charming diary. Once again Bruce Whatley, the illustrator, lovingly portrays this wild, nocturnal bundle X 2 with super cuteness-factor-plus. The human is pretty cute too, goes without saying… I especially love the nappies/diapers and spotty socks. This is a great book for new readers as the text is simple, and repetitive in parts. Good for learning/anticipating the days of the week. For us older readers, it’s a great opportunity to ham-up the voice drama as you read to littlies. I love books where I can go silly with my voice and expressions. So much fun. Three and 4 year olds are particularly happy to have me read this wombat story (and the prequel) to them.“Diary of a Wombat” and “Diary of a BABY Wombat” together, are 5 star. Diary of a BABY Wombat is 4.5 star on its own, in my opinion.*note: this book is also available on with the title, “Baby Wombat’s Week,” in hardcover and kindle format.
A very funny book, not quite as good as a Diary of a Wombat, but still excellent. My 4 year-old son really likes the book...we usually read it several times a day.
I bought this book for my grandson This is a cute rendition of a baby wombat's diary. The book is to the point and adorable for a little one wth a short attention span. Cute illustrations, easy to look at and read.
Jackie French's wombat is back, this time with a baby who tells her own story through "diary" entries complemented by visual scenes. These humorously highlight the difference between the baby's perspective and that of her mother. In the course of a week the young wombat befriends a human child, helps her mother look for a new hole, and eventually finds her way inside the human house. While it would be impossible to equal the brilliance of the original Diary of a Wombat (Ala Notable Children's Books. Younger Readers (Awards)) by French, Jackie (2003) Hardcover, this is a pretty good follow-up. Kids who loved the original will enjoy this one almost as much. Like the original, this one is good for reading aloud and for early reading practice.
I know it sounds obvious, it's hard to compete with the original. Diary of a Baby Wombat is cute, but I wish it would have tried harder to stick to the diary style that Diary of a Wombat was written in. The funniest parts of both books are when it describes the wombat's actions with a few words, but this is the majority of the first book, while this book strays from that too often.
My toddler loved this book from the very first read. It is one of the sturdiest picture books we own and the beautiful illustrations on a white background are so endearing to little people. A simple and fun loving story, that has gained the toddler seal of approval
