Then this is a must read. While covering a large and somewhat complex topic (the Old Testament), Kaminski's book is highly readable and, more importantly, it sucks you into the story of God. Have you ever wondered why it seems that the God of the Old Testament is different from the God of the New Testament? Have you found portions of the Old Testament that just didn't seem to make sense? Have you wondered, as a Christian, if you even need to care about the Old Testament? These were a few of the questions that I had about the Old Testament before reading Casket Empty, and I can honestly tell you that my life was changed. Now, instead of the Old Testament being a puzzle that I'll never figure out, it is a source of life and joy for my faith! I cannot say enough good things about this book. Take it and read it, then read it again! You'll be glad you did.
This is an excellent book/study guide! I have found myself going deeper into the Word after reading just a few pages. You really have to follow the reading suggestions of the Word to get a full understanding to help you through the book. Have to have the timeline booklet also. Can't wait for the New Testament to to come out this summer !
This book should be used together with CASKET EMPTY chart. The book explains the chart. I love both the book and the chart. They have helped me so much in understanding the OT history. Before I got to know and study the OT history along with this material, I had hard time reading and understanding the OT history. I always recommend CASKET EMPTY both book and chart for new believers and those who have difficulty reading the OT history with hood understanding. Highly recommended!!!
This was my first digital book. I'm only about 2/3 through it and I would highly recommend it. This study of the Old Testament will make the New Testament come alive. This study helps to better understand what Paul and Peter are talking about when they mention items from the Old Testament. If you have none or minor knowledge of the Abrahamic Covenant, you won't regret getting this book.
So I read this right alongside the old testament. I read the summary and the explanation given by the study guide and then afterword I read the book of the bible that had just been reviewed. I cannot say how much this helped me to truly grasp the overall narrative and story of the Old Testament. Reading the bible along this guide really does help bring it alive in a very fresh way. Parts the before seemed old, boring or irrelevant make sense in light of God's overarching redemptive plan. A wonderful read for anyone trying to grasp the old testament!
I am using this guide for a class I am taking on the Old Testament, taught by a senior pastor of my church. Casket Empty is beautifully written, and clearly explains each section of study. The author, Carol M. Kaminski, is a highly skilled writer. She imparts her tremendous knowledge and understanding of the Old Testament with enthusiasm and love for her subject matter. The book is an excellent choice for studying God's word.
This book is a super way to look at the entirety of the Old Testament in a very easy to understand manner! Excellent scholarship and material, yet this book keeps the need for simplicity in full view. This is the best book on Old Testament survey that I have read. Excellent!
Many people read the Bible without a guide. This is like climbing Mt. Everest without a Sherpa, and it can be dangerous. Our misunderstandings about God as he is portrayed in the Old Testament can be disheartening and lead to some discouraging conclusions. Why does God show Abraham bleeding halves of severed animals? The Old Testament is bizarre to us, we don't understand the cultural context and the larger picture. We often break Scripture into a couple verses to use in devotionals or just read certain stories or sections, but we don't seek to understand God's purposes in the grand overall story. Kaminski is our guide. She has studied the mountain of the Old Testament and knows its paths. She knows how to guide us to to summit where we can get a vision of God's grand story. Casket Empty provides a framework for readers to understand for themselves who God is, what he has done for us, and how he wants us to respond to him.
