Silva has compiled a fine little work on topics related to biblical culture. The book, derived from two of Zondervan’s more expansive works, is organized by helpful topics like family, work, society and government yet a variety of related issues are included under major topics. The chapter on household, for example, includes discussions on food, water and health in addition to housing matters. Although often differentiated, the work freely mixes Old Testament, Inter-Testament and New Testament customs leading to a generalization of subjects that often changed over time. Photos ranging from ancient Near Eastern iconography to current Middle Eastern culture enhance the volume and the reader’s ability to visualize a topic. In places Silva’s style is listy including different types of metals, various trades or implements used for farming. The book is especially helpful for the general student of the Bible in providing a basic sense of biblical customs without expanded archaeological or linguistic discussions. Inclusion of an index would have been a great addition to this work. This work is recommended for both church and school educators as well as students of the Bible that are seeking insight from behind the text.

This is a good BASIC book dealing with cultures in the Bible. I like that it has pictures to illustrate some points.
