Those of us who operate in fields where biblical resources are employed on a daily basis often take for granted that everyone understands the difference between the different kinds of resources available to those who desire to study the Bible more deeply. Commentaries, for example, are single- or multi-volume works that provide linguistic, contextual, historical, literary, et. al. analyses of books and verses of the Bible, while Bible dictionaries focus on defining biblical/theological terminology one might encounter in the study of a passage of Scripture.Bible handbooks are one of the most useful tools, and one of the most overlooked--these helpful volumes compile a great deal of general information about Bible books and key passages, along with brief explanations about certain terminology and tips for reading and interpreting the Scriptures all in one compact volume. Handbooks don't provide the depth of information one might find in a commentary, nor the detailed definitions of a Bible dictionary, but for a one-stop resource, it's hard to do better than a good Bible handbook.As a seminary educated minister, I say this without hesitation: The Baker Illustrated Bible Handbook is probably the best of its kind.This is a beautiful volume. Its glossy pages are splashed with full color photos and easy to read type, along with each of its major divisions marked with a color-coded stripe at the bottom of the page for easy access to needed materials. The scholarship in the volume is second-to-none, and because it holds a 2011 copyright, that scholarship is completely up-to-date. Add to that a remarkably solid binding and a reasonable weight, and you have a book that is imminently useful and portable for its size.
