If you've ever lived in the New England area, you know that snow storms can arrive quickly. Animals seem to sense their coming long before people do. If people look up, a halo around the moon in winter is a harbinger of weather change.Billy Steers is the author and illustrator of this delightful book, one in a series of children's books, and contributor to over forty others. A native of Roxbury, Connecticut, he knows about winters in the area having lived there much of his life. He is also very familiar with its unique traditions and seasonal events. His books center around national celebrations with their parades, harvest festivals, folks helping with a barn raising. This book focuses on the small community's gathering shortly after Thanksgiving on the Green to watch the traditional lighting of the village Christmas tree. This year there's a big problem. A snow storm has dumped a lot of snow in a short time, threatening cancellation of the tree lighting. Farmer Bill, a hearty New England farmer, saw the halo around the moon, put chains on Mac his tractor, and is prepared. He and Mac, with bucket attached to its hitch, save the event. By dislodging vehicles stuck in the snow as well as Mac's buddy, Shelby the farm's horse, who is pulling the tree, the activities go on "without a hitch'!The books are written for pre-school and early elementary aged children. On both front and back cover pages are two main "characters" in each story diagrammed and labeled with names of what each wears or carries. Children and adults can refer to these pictures as they read the story. Number Three, the village's fire truck and Tractor Mac are featured in this book.
