This is a fantastic resource. I was surprised to open the pages and see how it is laid out. It takes a few hundred of the most common words - bad, beautiful, begin, tall, taste & teach, for example - and gives you other words you can use in place of these to make your writing more interesting and specific. Of course, that is the purpose of a thesaurus, right? But most resources like this cram all the words together in difficult to read entries, and many have little to no explanation of the meaning of the words or the differences in meaning between the various synonyms suggested. These small shades of meaning are essential for ESL students and other learnings to choose the right word. This book does a good job explaining the differences. In its descriptions, it uses words that the reader will actually understand, without over-simplifying it. Every entry has example sentences for a variety of the suggested words. This is an "essential" guide, so you won't find every word in the English language there, but you'll find most of the ones you need, and tons of new words to make your vocabulary more interesting and clear. In fact, I would recommend that a student choose a half dozen a week and practice the synonyms just to build vocabulary.
A match made in heaven? For college or high school, adding this to your American Heritage Dictionary, 4th Edition, and using them diligently will improve your reading comprehension and writing performance immediately.Start aiming for your best reading comprehension and excellence in writing. These are well printed; easy to use, and necessary for you to be in the competitive top percent of your class.
