In this text, Dr. Rev. Siang-Yang Tan provides a comprehensive and practical overview of psychotherapy and integration. The first two parts focus on practice, theories, and techniques that any psychology student (whether in a secular school or seminary) will find helpful. The third section offers a Christian approach to counseling, with illustrative examples that bring theory into real-world application. Dr. Tan's scholarly and fine-tuned writing make these chapters easy-to-follow, yet packed with information. He has distilled the most up-to-date and relevant research into a book that is sure to become a classic in seminaries and churches all over the world. I highly recommend this to students, professors, pastors, and anyone else looking to expand their counseling skills. Thank you Dr. Tan!
I am a grad student at a secular university. This was extremely helpful on helping me know how various psychological theories blend with the bible. I also plan to practice as a Christian counselor. This book was refreshing and very insightful.
The comprehensive and scholarly review of the theories, principles and effectiveness of the bewildering forest of counseling methodologies is an excellent overview of the spectrum ( but definitely not light reading) The superb third section is biblically sound and a practical integration of scripture, prayer, the Holy Spirit and the personal requirements of a counselor.I am purchasing the Kindle version after first purchasing the hardcopy. I plan to restudy the book where I can highlight, annotate and copy some of Dr Tans excellent summary listings.Highly recommended for anyone involved in, or interested in effective Christian counseling.( also recommended is Gary Collin's very practical Christian Counseling 3rd Edition: Revised and Updated
It's an excellent technical book on therapeutic approaches and their development and practical use. The christian perspective is also very informative, but a small part of the book. The language used is great if you want to impress an instructor in a paper or prospective employer.
I am taking a counseling theories class that uses the Jones and Butman textbook. I have found Dr. Tan's text even more helpful for breaking down and understanding each of theories and particularly how they can be applied by a Christian counselor.
This is a great reference for Christian counselors and psychotherapists. Whether student or professional, this is the new Jones and Butman for you.The only downside is there is not as exhaustive amount of information as I would like about more modern theories such as Feminist Theory, Solutions-Focused, and more of the Postmodern theories. All in all, great information on integration of Psychology with Christianity!
Great text book. Easy read. In our claas we had to text books. We all prefeer this book .Tan takes counseling and breaks it down on a level that any one can understand. The fact that he puts a lot of theories in the christian perspectives makes it that much interesting.
I found Dr Tan's book "Counseling and Psychotherapy to be an excellent study and tremendous value. It provided a great overview of the broad range of counseling theories and offered the strengths and weaknesses of each method. At the close of each chapter the author provided a concise accessment of the theory's application from a Christian point of view.
