I bought this for my 6 year old. She loves to read and really loves to write stories. She can use this book, but it will also grow with her. She should benefit from this one for several years. In the meantime, we have a lot of fun as she's learning "what another word for___?"
This is the best young Thesaurus we have found. It's organized similar to "the big boys" and is easy to read and use.
I chose to buy 12 of these thesauri after a colleague showed me hers. I liked it because I teach 2nd grade English learners who need to clearly understand synonyms and antonyms and how a thesaurus differs from a dictionary as a reference tool. Most other thesauri I had previewed for children were lacking our vocabulary words or contained more information than necessary, as if trying to compete with a dictionary. That would have confused my students. This book is thin, but no space is lost to superfluous information: entry word, synonyms in black, antonyms in red; that's it. Also, since the antonyms are in red, it is easily seen, on any page, that not every word has an antonym. Since buying this tool, my students' writing, and interest in improving their writing, has greatly increased. It encourages them to take risks with the language, which leads to some great discussions about word choice. I would, and do, highly recommend this thesaurus to anyone.
This is great to help your kids learn and with better writing vocabulary. My son thinks it is fun to look up words and see what other words mean the same thing. It is helpful now that he is learning to be more descriptive with his writing skills which is required for state tests at his age.
It is ok for a starter thesaurus. I purchased it to help my kids with expanding their writing. There have been several words that my kids have gone looking for and they haven't been there. They wind up going to the internet for answers like they were before we had it. I will probably end up getting a different one that has a better variety. However I paid less than $1 for it plus shipping so it really isn't that terrible for what I paid for it.
A thesaurus that is useful for upper elementary students is hard to find. This one has enough words, without being overwhelming. A variety of synonyms are given for each word, along with an opposite for many words.
As an English learner, I found this thesaurus very helpful to develop my vocabulary every day.I would recommend it not only for children but also for foreigners who try to improve their English.
Since this is clearly a small children's book, it was comfortable for my 8 year old grand daughter to use it to learn what information is in a thesaurus and how to use one. We all enjoy seeing her do independent research now that she knows how to use the correct tools needed for the job.
