Working as a psychologist in public psychiatry brings with it the demands of treating the more severe end of major mental illnesses as well as the limitations of exploring spiritual dimensions of client's experiences. In exploring the literature relating to Christianity's response to mental illness I've come across many poorly reserched or narrowminded conceptions of major mental illness, accurate psychiatric assessment and treatment, spiritual conceptualisations of presenting problems, spiritual diagnoses combining knowledge from psychiatry and Biblical examples and fomrulating appropriate treatment plans. This book offers extremely well thought out material on the foundations of Christianity's role in viewing mental illness, the importance of utilising God's given knowledge from psychiatry and related fields, as well as the ultimate provision of God's intervention in helping those with a mental illness. Highly recomended for people with training in psychiatry and those exploring the integration between psychiatry and Christianity.
This book is packed with a lot of great articles by some heavy hitters in the Christian counseling community. It was a required book for my master's program but is one of my favorites.
This book provides very useful information for the christian counselor. It provides great insight for understanding people, problem development and intervention strategies. I am in the begining stages of my personal development in Christian counseling and the knowledge and biblical applications that the author provides are both interesting and helpful. This book contains a lot of information however if you read the chapters that supports your interest in this field of counseling, you will be enlighten and encouraged as you prepare to assist people God may send to you for help.
I am not yet through the book, however, at three quarters of the way through, I am very impressed and once I am done I will return to update this review. In the meantime, to add a bit of background, I have a forensic psychology degree, a masters of science, and I find the integration between the two fields smooth and considerate of one another as well. I am only now refining my theological foundation and therefore, cannot comment on the religious accuracy except from a layman's perspective and what little I have cross referenced as accurate (so far so good). Easy to read and comprehend and offers a greater latitude to the traditional counseling paradigm. It arrived on time, as described by & manufacturer, the packaging was undamaged, and the product itself was unmolested and made with quality materials.
I purchased this book for a college class but I've recommended it to friends not in school. It's full of good information. I was convicted, challenged, and excited by reading. The editrs did a great job.
This book is very informative and inspiring. It will be helpful in the field and within church community. Also, it will help with all interpersonal relationships now and in the future.Thank you.
It is an excellent resource. It uses language that lay persons can understand and yet offers excellent info. Money well spent. L Wilson
This is a really well-written book. I have just begun reading it for a college course, and I'm already finding myself in concurrence with what it has to say. I feel it would be an excellent resource for someone who would like to learn about how Christian Counseling works and what it is all about, and it is also an resource for learning how to counsel in a Christ-centered, Biblically based manner. I am looking forward to reading the entire book. It is refreshing to read a book that emphasizes the same things I do when it comes to what one needs to prioritize when counseling.
