This history expands one's view of the Stone-Campbell Movement beyond the United States where it first blossumed to all corners of the globe where the Disciples have served and exalted Jesus Christ. This history is also broad in inclusion of the women and black Disciples (and other minorities) throughout the last two hundred years, With a balance between individuals and churches and agencies, the events are disclosed in multiple layers. The large bibliography indicates all the careful scholarship that went into this work and the difficulty in collecting, organizing, and presenting the flow of the Movement from the churches at Brush Run and Cane Ridge through controversy and division to the present churches continuing to constantly change. I am grateful to Drs. Williams, Foster, and Blowers for reintroducing the Movement to its roots and encouraging its continuing growth.
The authors of this book have produced an excellent history of the Stone-Campbell Movement. This book does not aim at being a comprehensive history, but, as the subtitle indicates, a global history. The editors have thought hard about the content and sequence of the book, but there are inherent difficulties with such a large project. This book seeks to avoid traditional pitfalls of accounts of the history of Christianity, such as neglect of missions, androcentrism, and eurocentrism. While the Stone-Campbell Movement began in the United States, it truly has become a global movement. This book has begun the conversation on many parts of Stone-Campbell history, but serves as an invitation for others to tell the stories and write the histories of previously neglected parts of the Stone-Campbell Movement.
Good show, all the way around. It's strong on the world-wide denomination, less on the US.
This book met all my expectations. I would recommend it to all who are interested in the Restoration Movement.
Great history, great resource, great movement. An extremely valuable resource for anyone involved with the SCM
