An Exposition Of Hebrews (Arthur Pink Collection Book 21)
Ebooks Online

▶ DESCRIPTIONThe doctrinal importance of Hebrews is exceeded by none, not even by the Roman Epistle. Where its teachings are believed, understood, and embodied in the life, ritualism and legalism (the two chief enemies of Christianity) receive their death blow. In no other book of Scripture are the sophistries and deceptions of Romanism so clearly and systematically exposed. So fully and pointedly are the errors of Popery refuted, it might well have been written since that satanic system became established. Well did one of the Puritans say, "God foreseeing what poisonous heresies would be hatched by the Papacy, prepared this antidote against them."▶ CONTENTS1. Introduction2. He studied at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, USA, for only six weeks before beginning his pastoral work in Colorado. From there he pastored churches in California, Kentucky, and South Carolina, before moving to Sydney Australia for a brief period, preaching and teaching. In 1934, at 48 years old, he returned to his native England. He took permanent residence in Lewis, Scotland, in 1940, remaining there 12 years until his death at age 66 in 1952.

This review concerns the one-volume commentary, ISBN 0-8010-6857-6.I mainly purchased Pink's commentary because almost without exception, the recently-written commentaries cited his work. I am not seminary-trained; I teach a SS class. This commentary is a great resource for me.Pink wrote this in the mid-20th century, and of course used the KJV for his work. I don't use the KJV, but I found this didn't hurt the use of Pink's work much at all. There were a few sections that had lost a bit of utility, but for the most part, the commentary was valid for the ESV that I use. This commentary is not a scholarly work, and there are no uses of greek or hebrew in the text. It is an expository commentary, and this makes it accessible for those without training in biblical languages (such as myself). Where original languages are referenced, they are transliterated.Pink is not Arminian in his outlook, but unlike some of the older non-Arminian commentaries, he does not follow Calvin or Luther blindly. His work differs from theirs in several places, such as chapter 6. On the whole, the commentary follows the doctrines of grace very well and has no mix of semi-Pelagianism in it.Pink does not include a bibliography, which helps keep the volume uncluttered. Extensive bibliographies are available in newer commentaries (see Word Biblical Commentary, for example) which are more inclusive due to their recent date of publication. He also does not include chapter notes, but cites his sources by name within the chapters. The book is over 1300 pages, and all of it is expository material, so you won't go wanting in any section of the text.
