A.W.Pink gives a stern warning,in the introduction,to those who deceive any into thinking that repentance is not necessary in this dispensation. The author asserts that repentance is as necessary as 'faith in Christ' is for salvation. He is also concerned that even where it is conceded that repentance is essential, that the views of what true repentance is,are deficient.Mr.Pink defines true repentance as p.9 "A realization in the heart, wrought therein by the Holy Spirit,of the awfulness of ignoring the claims of God and defying His authority. It is therefore a holy horror and hatred of sin,a deep sorrow for it,an acknowledgement of it before God and a complete heart forsaking of it."It is through a contemplation of the law that sin is made known. As Paul teaches us in Romans 3:20 'by the law is the knowledge of sin'. Believers need to spend time reflecting on the law of God to increasingly make sin known to them. There is a need for the preaching of the law of God in the pulpits. This is one of the great needs of our generation(for sin ,lawlessness and anarchy flourish when the preaching of God's law diminishes). To know what one needs to repent of there must be an understanding of what sin is. There are many definitions that could be given, and Pink has given various definitions in his writings, but the definition he gives here cuts to the heart of it:p.7 "Sin is saying,I renounce the God who made me;I disallow His right to govern me,I care not what He says to me,what commands He has given ...I am going to be Lord of myself." I wonder what those who teach that you can receive Christ as Savior but do not need to submit to Him as Lord would think of this definition. Anyone with even a surface acquaintance of the Scriptures should be able to see the truth Pink has set forth here.
