This book is about a black family living in Mississippi in the early nineteen hundreds. It is hard for them to be treated fairly and get their own rights. It is especially hard for a boy named Hammer to live with this unfairness and unjustness. He lives with his family on a farm that has the only well with water still in it. There is a drought and everyone came to their well to get water, black people and white people, and no matter who it was they shared their water. Hammer has to put up with all this and even with his family's kindness to other people, they are still treated with unfairness. In Hammer's anger he ends up by hurting a white person and getting him and his family in shame and him in a lot of trouble. It did not help the the father of the white boy had a very bad temper and an even worse one for blacks. Hammer and his brother now had to work on the white man's farm for the rest of the summer. Hammer luckily behaved and held back his temper very well for that time period but his and his family's sufferings were still not over. One day when they woke up there was a terrible scent coming from the well. When they opened the lid to the well there were all sorts of dead animals floating in it. They found out that the white boys had played a joke and ruined their good water of the the well. They were sorry to find out that they had not only ruined the water for Hammer's family but their own and many others. Their father was completely ashamed and made them even more ashamed in front of everybody. He made his own boys go down in the well and get the animals with their own hands. After many months the well cleared and the water was good, but they never saw that white family at their well again. I really enjoyed reading this book because it was very, very exiting and realistic.
