Gorgeous art work combines with a tender story of bringing a young girl into some understanding of her mother's up bringing in a different era and a different culture from what she herself has known. Lovely.
I purchased the book to read and also view the illustrations. I plan on visiting the Jerry Pickney exhibit in Atlanta in December.
Ernestine visited her uncle and aunt at her birthplace. When she first arrives, she's overjoyed when her uncles tell her about where she was born. However, her cousin Jack thinks she too citified and makes fun at her. Ernestine doesn't' like that and the story doesn't develop beyond that. Ernestine never solves the problem of Jack being mean.
