I'm giving this three stars because it does explain the holiday simply, and I know it's a children's book, but the fact that it's like 5 pages long was a bit of a disappointment. The pictures aren't very engaging for a little one either. I'll use it, but only until I find a better book.

With its simple language and lovely pictures, this book is a wonderful introduction to Chanukah. It is geared towards preschoolers, but it is also perfect for a quick introduction to a longer Chanukah book (like _Latkes and Applesauce_ or _Herschel and the Chanukah Goblins_) in a public primary school where the audience might require some basic information about the holiday before reading the more in-depth story.

The story in this book is a bit disjointed and doesn't seem to keep my son's attention. It starts off with (1) a short explanation of what Chanukah celebrates, (2) then an explanation of the chanukiah (though in the story it is called a "menorah") and how to light it, (3) then latkes and sour cream/applesauce, then (4) the dreidel game, and then (5) gift giving. So, it's not really a story per se, just a recap of Chanukah bullet points. Since it doesn't seem to resonate with my son, we just use the pictures to make our own story.

We are a Christian family who celebrates Hanukkah with our Jewish friends. I bought this book for my children as a simple explanation of what Hanukkah is all about. This is a nice board book, and geared more toward toddlers and young children. I would recommend it to a friend.

I used this book in a special education preschool setting. Although none of my students celebrate Chanukah they all absolutely loved this book! I'm still getting special requests for it during circle time and it's January. The story's cute and theres lots of good, age appropriate and relatable info in the book. My kids love saying menorah and counting the candles on each page.

Great introduction to Chanukah- we were looking for non-fiction information for two grandsons- and for our Chanukah celebration that included family members of several religious backgrounds. This was terrific!

I had a hard time deciding on a first Chanukah book for my son and I am so glad I picked this one. It tells of the Feast of Lights for 8 nights and mentions typical aspects of the holiday like the story of Judah and the Maccabees as well as traditional rituals like lighting the menorah and using the shamash. There is a nice rhythm to the story that was entertaining to my young son. Another big highlight was that the artwork is really beautiful. Buy it!

The perfect book for children 2 and younger. It's an easy read. My nephew likes to chew on the corners (which is fine because it's a sturdy board book).
