We chose this book over another mainly because of the link to National Geographic. We're glad we did! It begins with explaining what geography is, the major themes in geography, and the tools geographers use, then moves on to physical geography (including weather and human interaction with the environment) before moving into different global cultures. Sections have maps showing where the region is located on the globe and how the land mass is shaped; they also have Time Perspectives (as in Time Magazine) which gives a good breakdown of the information being studied. Each has good overall information on country history (including wars, natural disasters, etc.), government, and cultures. Each section has Review and Assess areas, as well as Section Reviews and Visual Summaries. There are also short guides in the margins of each section, covering vocabulary words and reading strategies for that particular section. This book is engaging for my child; the sections pack enough information to learn, but not so much that it's overload. We are using this for my high schooler, and we find it's actually better than the local school's history and social studies textbooks. I would highly recommend this for any home schooler.
The book was marked on more than i thought it would be. Having said that, i still love textbookrush! I will still be looking for them when i order books. I have yet to be disappointed.
