We use Math-U-See for our math curriculum. It is a good program, but IMHO is is very mechanical. That's whre this book comes in. Singapore math focuses on students doing math in their heads using special methods and techniques. The workbook presents these techniques and they have been very effective. Essentially, this workbook is an introduction to the Singapore method. Each week focuses on a new method (52 total). There is one set of problems per week. Tear-out help sheets can be placed in plastic slip covers for reference. All pages are perforated and can be torn off. The publisher says they are "reproduceable". Another area our curriculum lacks is word problems. We bought Singapore Math's word problems book along with this one. They go together very well.
I really expected my children would learn neat mental tricks but it mostly the usual one that you come up with on your own. It also does not have much practice per strategies so no way to ensure mastery before moving to the next completely different strategy.
I love the organized manner in which specific mental math skills are provided. However, I do wish that more practice problems were included with each page. I do recommend these books, especially to teachers who may not have credible mental math skills themselves, because each skill is taught succinctly and simply. Good luck! Students love the challenges in this book. It is helping them grow in their ability to make reasonable answers.
It was missing the first several strategies and appeared to be a defective printing.
