Read the latest in The Bregdan Chronicles in two days. I felt it was almost more gripping than the books during the war, because of the constant fear and expectation that something bad was about to happen; I was as worried as the characters! I had not read that much about Reconstruction, but Ginny definitely did her research for this one. I had no idea about the Memphis riots. And even though I was born in Louisiana and am well aware of the ugly history there (and to be honest, the continued racism and disparity due to race), I had not heard the story of the convention either (assuming that it was based on true events). It was horrific to read those parts. As for the rest of the book, I was glad to see some movement with the characters, like Carrie finally attending school, and Rose and Moses making more plans of their own. I would have liked to see more of Carrie's actual experiences in classes and with other students than her housemates, and less handwringing and sidebar revelations with Janie and Abby; those can get tiresome and repetitive. Perhaps in the next book we'll see more behind the scenes of the medical school. I felt the two new romances were a little rushed - but then again, it's a novel. :) One of them I had seen coming a few books back (no spoilers!) so I was happy about it, even if it felt a little tacked on to the end. I look forward to seeing what happens next for Rose and Moses and others on the plantation, and I have a feeling some of the other black characters will have some big changes as the books progress. In terms of the editing, I'm so glad Ginny is working with a new editor - I only spotted a handful of minor errors this time, and the formatting was clean and easy to read on the Kindle. It was a long book, but I didn't feel like it was dragging at all. Keep it up, Ginny!
I'm so excited Glimmers of Change (Book 7) is finally released! These characters have become like family and I feel like I've been out of touch with my "family" while waiting on this release. Ginny is a wonderful writer and brings each character to life. When one character is affected, I feel as though my own family is suffering along. Sometimes when I'm talking with friends, I begin to share the trauma or crisis and then realize, "Oh, that's not my real family!" We have a chuckle and move on. I downloaded Glimmers of Change just after it's release last night. I'm on Chapter 4 now. I'm contemplated "pretending to be sick" so I can curl up and put all my daily responsibilities aside and read the entire book - hopefully without distractions. Thanks Ginny! You are a prized writer and are much appreciated!
I appreciate this book as much as the first 6 books in this series. The author, Ginny, keeps your attention by ending every chapter with a peaked desire to get on to reading the next one. Learning more about the reality of civilization in American in the nineteenth century and reading about the courage and hope that the individual characters in the book had to have to move forward is encouragement for us today to never stop working for change and equality. Nothing is new under the sun as even today in the 21st century there is still so much that calls for change. There is a need to value life and to acknowledge that all men and women are created equal in God and in His image. This book is an encouragement to continue the fight for equality, respect for each other and a need to acknowledge that irregardless of gender or color every individual was created in the image of God and are called to reflect that as we live in our respective communities. Keep up the great work Ginny, your work and your writing is appreciated very much. I look forward to "Shifted by the Winds"
I have totally enjoyed this whole series by Ginny Dye. This ongoing story is very captivating and spell-binding. I found it difficult to put this book down ever! I so wanted to know what happens to each and every interesting character. I am not a history buff at all but she has made history incredibly interesting, as well. I am not sure what I am going to read until her next novel is out in the spring! Excellent excellent series.
Book 7 of this wonderful series is everything a reader of the previous books could have hoped for. The characters become more rich with each new story. The depth of their loves and losses ingrain them more deeply in the readers mind. I will be impatient waiting for the next installment and will undoubtedly buy it on its release day as I have before. I am awed by the research that Ms Dye puts into her stories and love how much I have learned about both the Civil War and Reconstruction while enjoying the lives of the characters
Loved this book. So much I could relate to from my life of seeing years of change in racial relations, currently in a backward movement. I wish that every man, woman, and child of all races could read Glimmers of Change and examine their own thoughts about the human soul which is so artfully crafted in this series. The pearls of wisdom that pass through the characters are worthy of note for me to use in my life and pass along to my family. Thank you for making me appear wiser than I am.
