Brooke meets Lucas when he comes to tell her that his twin, her son's father, is dead; complexities ensue, but so does love.(Though reviews are inherently subjective, I prefer to provide some organization to my opinions through the use of a personal rubric. The following notes may contain spoilers.)Plot and Setting: 4 -- Plot has unique elements and no major holes, but a few shaky bits and/or a slight lack of focus. I loved the plot up until the very soap-opera-ish twist, which I'm not a big fan of. Setting is clear and believable. Timeline may be a bit hard to follow. Though it's clearly summer, more exact dates are never given. There's mention of events in book 1 being almost 6 months before, which makes me think it's at least July, but then later on there's a comment about something 'earlier in June,' which doesn't seem to fit. More clarity would be nice.Characters: 5 -- Relatable, realistic, interesting, dynamic characters. Brooke's mistrust of men started with her father's affair, and Lincoln ignoring the opportunity to be in Danny's life just reinforced it. Lucas's steadiness gets past her walls, though. He's used to stepping up and taking care of people, which he quickly extends to Brooke and Danny. Brooke helps him see he can't control it all. Even minor characters have depth, as do the relationships between characters. Lindsay, as an independent, opinionated woman like Brooke, is a fun character. Amnesia-Lincoln is a little odd, though, as is Sylvia's initial response.Mechanics and Writing: 3.5 -- Scattered typos, punctuation issues, or word errors, but nothing that seriously hinders understanding. Some small things left highlighted by a proofreader, etc. Basically needs another run-through by that proofreader.
