Carol did her own review of her first book (I Am Really A Princess), so I shall do one of this book. I'm really not one to go around reading children's books, like, as a hobby, but one day, the author herself told me to read her book. I did and everything in it was true. From waking up late and almost missing the bus, to colds, to a little girl named Annie who's so into her book that she misses natural disasters and big black bugs, not to mention runaway busses. My very favorite poems include: "Amanda"(about a boy who thinks a girl likes him because she treats him so bad,) "Simon Says" (This poem is one sentence that's six lines long. I dare you to try to read it in one breath, I can,)"Far Away"(Annie's poem,) and "Clock Watching"(teachers will LOVE this one,) those are just a few. If you're an adult that's just messing around in the Children's section, go to the bookstore and FIND THIS BOOK!!!! If you're looking for the perfect book for you're school-age kids, go to the bookstore and FIND THIS BOOK!!!! Basically, if you're breathing, FIND THIS BOOK!!!! I guarantee this will tickle your funnybone 'til you pop!!

I am a student teacher and I used this book in a first grade class during a unit on poetry. The students loved it. I had to read each poem at least 3 times each before moving on to the next one. Now, my students want to read the book on their own. The poems are great to use for short skits/plays. My class loved performing "The Flag" and "Moonwalker". This is a must for any classroom that wants to get students involved in poetry.

Love this book. The poems are fun. One or two will confuse kids as they may be a little outdated, but most will be understood. I've bought this as gifts for other kids because our daughter likes it so much. Got it at age five and it is still a popular book on her shelf two years later.

I recently read this collection of poems to my second graders and they loved every minute ! The pictures are delightful and interesting and the poems really relate to their school days. Bravo !

I tutor an elementary student in reading at our nearby school. He is a hard worker but is way behind his class in reading skills due to illnesses and absences. We both fell in love with the Lunch Money poems and illustrations. We used it as his reward after a hard 45 minutes of working on phonics, comprehension and flow of the narrative. He would give me a sly smile and leaf through the poetry til he made his choice. I would read it to him using funny, dramatic voices. Sometimes he would pretend to hide it in his take home bag. I promised he could have the book at the end of the school year. That's why I had to order more. I intend to make it part of my arsenal of tools to help next year's child. I would recommend it for any one working with 5 to 9 year old children. Ruth DeRisi

I'm a 2nd grade teacher who has an entire unit dedicated to poetry. My kids absolutely LOVE all of Carol Diggory Shields' books. They're silly, smart, and always entertaining to read. I promise this isn't just a biased review because I happen to know her (she works at the local library), but I can wholeheartedly tell you that your kid/student/pet/self will enjoy this and any other book Mrs. Shields has written. And if you don't end up liking it, please send it to me and I'll be happy to have extra copies!

My 6th grade students loved this book and I must admit, I loved it, too! Fabulous!!

My first-grader begged us for this book after having read it repeatedly at school. It's still one of her very favorites. The poems are silly and witty and fun to read aloud, and the illustrations are funny as well. Books like this really help young children develop a love for words and for reading.
