Lots of graphic novels have lots of sex. Loads of pinup style bosomy babes and so on. Eye candy. If the actual content of the novel involves sex it is often angry sex or violent sex or transgressive in some fashion. The other direction is frat boy sex and graphic versions of old sex jokes. This book is remarkably fresh, interesting and rewarding because it blends a clever plot device with two engaging adults who speak frankly and openly, but cheerfully and comfortably, about sex. It's also very funny in a sly but totally non-smarmy fashion.The premise is that when Suzie has an orgasm, time stops and everything freezes except for Suzie who can move freely in this frozen world. When Jon has an orgasm the same thing happens. They meet and make love, and are astonished when they find they can share this frozen world. Much of the plot involves what they do during this suspended time.But before that we follow each character, as a youth, discovering and figuring out this special ability. Then we follow Suzie and Jon's budding relationship. And this does have to be one of the best "meet cute" premises ever.This is a coming of age story, a love story, a caper story, and a meditation on loneliness and sexual longing and satisfaction. It is funny and it is very comfortable in what it is. It is "adult" not in the movie rating sense, but in that it is wise, a bit wistful, and reflects a grown up, but still puckish, sense of humor. This book was a surprise and delight and so much more than was expected.This TP collects the first five issues of the continuing Sex Criminals series as well as some bonus content that is actually pretty interesting.Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Sex Criminals is another amazing book from Image that pushes the boundaries and we are all better for it. Yes there is nudity in it. Yes they cuss and talk about sex and, gulp, have sex. It's not a comic for kids. If you think all comics are supposed to be for kids, then you are a moron. Are all novels for kids? Nope. Are all TV shows for kids? Nosiree. Now, before you think this book is the comic version of Skinamax, it is actually a fun and interesting relationship story that just happens to have sex in it because, well, it's what couples do. Also, it leads to them stopping time when they orgasm. Say what now? Yeah, when they each have the big O, time stops and they are able to move through it. Their big plan is to rob a bank while everything is frozen. The title of book is starting to make more sense now isn't it? Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky are some very funny guys and it shows in this book. Heck, the letter columns of each issue are worth buying the book for by themselves. Too bad they didn't include them in the TPB. Do yourself a favor and branch out and see how much fun you can have when you take a chance. This book is good. Real good.
It's funny. It's sexy. And yes, there is a lot of actual sex in it. I'm loving the wide brush use of nudity. The story itself is pretty original, presented in a fast paced way. I don't want to ruin it for you, because part of Sex Criminals is the mystery behind how it all works. What you need to know: this couple can stop time when they have sex. They are free to run around when time is stopped, and they get into a bit of mischief. Including robbing a bank. But they have a good reason (sort of). Some silly college level potty humor, but what do you expect? It's a fun book. Parents, this will depend on your family's comfort with nudity. Male and female. And drawings of characters having sex. Sometimes very silly sex. For the adults that are looking for an original story with a lot of comedy, definitely pick this book up.
Sex criminals is certainly one of the most unique premises for a story that I've read. Suzy and Jon are two people with an extraordinary ability to stop time whenever they orgasm. Using this power, they decide to rob a bank so they have enough money to save a library from foreclosure. Weird right?So anyway the main selling point of this book is the sex. Not porn, mind you, but sex. Both Suzie and John have frank discussions about how they learned about sex growing up, and how it affects both their own and their friends lives now in the present. These discussions are engaging and relatable.The comedy is generally good. Let's be clear, its nothing but sex jokes, but as long as you don't mind sex jokes, it's good for a good chuckle here and there. It just doesn't have anything as laugh out loud funny as say 'Preacher'.The book has one serious flaw though, and that's that the villains are badly, even lazily, written. The first page introduces the idea of the 'sex police', out to stop Suzie and John, and they have all the competence of drunk crane operator. The bank that they steal from is just as bad, being written off with one line as a cesspool of jerks that deserve everything they get. That part seriously needs to improve if I'm going to keep reading these comics.So, if you like sex, go for the read. You might be better off buying individual issues though. It's cheaper.
