Erwin Lutzer writes a compelling book about a topic sure to interest every one of us: what happens to you after you die. "One minute after we die we will either be elated or terrified. And it will be too late to reroute our travel plans."First he reviews the commonly held opinions about death, near death experiences, the bright white light and experiences drawn from the modern entertainment industry. Why take the fantasy and myths from someone who had an altered state of consciousness or a near death experience as a witness? Far better to rely on someone who was really dead, dead in a tomb for three days and then raised from death to life. This is none other than Jesus Christ, the Son of God, uniquely qualified to reveal to us what is on the other side of death.Using examples and explanations from the Holy Scriptures, Lutzer presents the bad news first, the descent into gloom for those who die in their sins. In contrast, for those who know Jesus Christ as their Saviour, death is an ascent to glory, with life continuing eternally in the New Jerusalem and all of the gifts and privileges for the redeemed in Christ. At the end of the book Lutzer shows how you can make sure that you will be ready when the final call comes by trusting solely on Jesus Christ for your salvation.

My father just died two months ago and this book caught my eye in the bookstore. I could not put it down, and read it in one night. It was so comforting, and let me know that as Christians, we really can face death with hope. It also let me know that death is a passage way to eternity with the Father...and comforted me tremendously.

I have really enjoyed this book and found it to be scripturally sound. A must-read for Christians who desire to see a preview of what is to come. It helps remove fear of death and challenges the Christian to live a more worthy life.

This book is an encouraging read for the Christian who is losing or has lost a loved one who is a believer. It helps to remove the fear of death. It also answers so many questions, and well, like about what is going on when people think they are being contacted by the dead. I gave this book to my mother and she not only read it but keeps it on her coffee table to look at on a regular basis. It's also very comforting to know the beauty and the glory that awaits us when we finally go home to Jesus.

This book answered many of my questions about when and where you go after death. It helped me become a better Christian. After reading this book I wanted all my friends and family to read it and get as excited about Christianity as I have. I can't understand anyone rejecting Christ's offer of eternal salvation after reading it.

To be honest, this book gets 4 stars, but I couldn't help but note the very low ratings it got from those who, apparently, disagree with the author's argument. That is fine. But labeling someone a hate-filled bigot, just because they express their opinion (which happens to disagree with your own) is not discourse at all, but a short circuit of discourse using very emotion-filled language that does little to address the particulars of the argument. This has been the problem with alot of the homosexual-marriage related debate, on both sides, there has been alot of fear, defensiveness, finger-pointing, and unrestrained anger. None of those things will serve the cause of truth (though they will most certainly help to further polarize us). Erwin Lutzer makes an argument (in my opinion, a very good one). If you disagree with him, propose a counter-argument and meet every one of his objections head-on and demonstrate the flaw in his thinking (if you do so, I promise to read your book too!). But don't label him a bigot just because you disagree with him; please, for all our sakes, don't do that. Lutzer is very much upfront in redressing the Church for being so insensitive, and sometimes, downright hateful. He calls upon her to repent of her genuine evils toward homosexual persons. He calls for Christians to love homosexuals, to end the sinful rancor, and work for the redemption of us all in the belief that Christ really has the power to make a new creation. Upon reading some of the reviews on the other hand, I began to wonder if I accidentally skipped the chapter entitled "Burn the Heretics and Gays!" So I checked again, and it is still not there! There is obviously much fundamental disagreement on this issue. That is fine. Are we willing to talk to one another and seek consensus together, or not?

This book answers many questions about what happens when you die, with emphasis from a Christian perspective. It was illuminating and had good scripture references. It was especially interesting to be listening to RC Sproul's (Reformed) tape-of-the-month tapes on this subject at the same time. It was like they were both reading from the same script. Come to think of it, they were! The reading is simple and broken down into easily manageable chapters, which makes good reading for those times when you only have ten minutes or so at a time. The level is good for both new Christians and more mature ones and even for non-Christians (an invitation is given). Definitely worth reading and something you might want to leave laying out so visitors can see it (they might want to borrow it).
