The text of this book is excellent - very inspiring for all ages. However, I hate the illustrations! I bought this book as a First Communion present for my nephew. I am not going to give it to him because the pictures are so unusual that they are distracting from the text. On several pages, the main character's angular head is sideways and looks like it was drawn first, cut out with scissors and pasted back on sideways. It caught my eye right away and ruined the book for me. I believe that most children (the target audience) will also dislike the illustrations. I am a college-educated lady with a Membership at the Art Institue of Chicago. I appreciate good art and have been exposed to many genres. I get that the illustrations were done in a non-conventional style on purpose. It is my opinion that the style does not work with the text.
Just for Today is a hardcover illustrated children's book, which was a daily set of rules of Pope John XXIII. It begins by telling us that Angelo Roncalli (later Pope John XXIII) declared at his First Communion that he always wanted to be good to people. In this book, he talks about what he will and will not do today. It focuses on self-improvement, not the improvement of others. There is also talk of taking it one day at a time and resting in God knowing that He loves you. It is a simple book with a simple message, but the message is powerful. In fact, it is a book I feel children and adults should read at least once a day. About the only thing I don't like about the book is the illustration style. I can't put my finger on it, but I'm just not a fan. Overall, I give this book 4 out of 5 stars and think the message of this book puts it in the category of must have for a Catholic home.
Based on the daily prayer of Pope St. John XXIII, "Just for Today" is a lavishly illustrated prayer book for young people.
