This is a good supplement to our homeschool program but I wish the book had more explanations and background information. There is a little 2-3 sentence introduction at the top of each page and then it follows a basic worksheet format. The information is geared towards the intended age group, the information is easy for them to read, and the directions are easy to follow. The worksheets follow the material that I have set up for my child based on the Core Knowledge series, "What Your Third Grader Needs to Know." The book is non-biased (it is not based on faith) so if you are looking for secular materials in your homeschool for science then this is a good start.I like this book and I will probably buy another one next year for 4th grade but I wish there was an informational page on the topic and then followed up with 2-4 activities/worksheets for each topic. I guess everyone's child learns at a different pace. I was kind of bummed out when it arrived and I realized that a lot of the material in this book was under my 3rd graders ability. I do try and make the best out of everything, which is why I will still find a good use for this book.I plan on spending the first couple of weeks reviewing some material from last year to help get the creativity flowing before we dive into our 3rd grade plans for homeschool and will use this book in the science portion.There are also a couple of sections that do cover material I don't believe he is familiar with and if I feel like the work is getting too easy and that I'm losing him to boredom, I'll supplement some of the material in the book with other information I've found online.All in all, it is decent for the price and I'm not terribly upset with my purchase. I also feel like other families will find this book incredibly helpful - it just wasn't what I expected.
My third grader absolutely loves this science book! She worked through this book very fast but had a lot of fun doing it. The sections are easy for kids to understand with questions that she had fun answering. Also, it has experiments that were easy for her to do as well. Most of the experiments needed things that we already had so she could actually do them. This is a great third grade workbook! It is definitely not a boring textbook!
WOw! This book is a must get; especially for homeschool providers. The science projects coincide with the worksheets/lessons inside. The items used in the projects are everyday items in the home.
I like the book, but I was hoping it was an introduction to the information a third grader will learn. Some things needed more explanation before an assignment could be completed. I was hoping it would introduce the concepts and areas of science my son would be learning once he started third grade. This book is geared towards kids who just got out of third grade. I still like it though, I just have to do more teaching than I was prepared for.
I LOVE IT!These books make science so much fun. The pages are easily photo copied and glossy. The included gold stars keep my child interested in completing a page. I like that the pages are able to be used for coloring as well as reading comprehension. 5 stars!
Good projects to keep my 8 yr olds interest
The reward system, is a star sticker for EVERY SINGLE PAGE THAT HAS BEEN FINISHED! Cheapens the "reward system" IMHO. Great content though, just not enough repetition/practicing of each concept.
