I fell in love with Crystal Bowman's new book, Grandma and Me, from the time I opened the envelope and saw the enchanting image of a grandmother and two children having a tea party as well as the enticing line about "rhyming devotions for you and your grandchild." This book is a perfect marriage of music, scripture, devotional readings and art, which will bless and teach not only the grandchildren to whom you read it but your own soul as well.The songs in the book are based on the piggyback song concept of putting the words to unfamiliar material (like scripture verses) with the tune of songs which most kids know and enjoy. Because they already know the melody of the song, they need only learn the new words. Crystal Bowman has done an exceptional job of matching the poetry rhythm and meter to the melody of the songs she has chosen. You will find songs written to the tunes of "Jesus Loves Me," "The B-I-B-L-E," "Mary Had a Little Lamb," and "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star." It's been my experience that some piggyback songs can be a little challenging to actually sing because the words don't always flow with the music, but I did not find a single hitch in any of her tunes.Each devotion includes a verse from the Bible as well as a short, easy to understand devotion and finishes up with either a song or a prayer. There is an addendum in the back that includes a simplified version of the 10 commandments, Psalm 23, the Lord's Prayer, and a Grandmother's Prayer/poem. There are also some valuable tips in the beginning of the book to suggest to grandmas who are separated by distance from their grandchildren ways to enjoy a spiritual relationship via Skype or other video chatting services or telephone.
