Ebooks Online

In this volume, Walter Brueggemann focuses on Second Isaiah (Isaiah 40-55), believed to be written by a second exilic poet, and Third Isaiah (Isaiah 56-66), a third group of texts that rearticulate Isaianic theology in yet another faith situation. Brueggemann discusses both the distinctiveness of the texts and their canonical relatedness.Books in the Westminster Bible Companion series assist laity in their study of the Bible as a guide to Christian faith and practice. Each volume explains the biblical book in its original historical context and explores its significance for faithful living today. These books are ideal for individual study and for Bible study classes and groups.

Brueggemann's commentary on Isaiah 40-66 is easily adaptable for a small group Bible study, a preaching guide, or even as a great resource for writing a paper. He does not get bogged down into detailed linguistic issues, but this is a framing, theological commentary. He is especially gifted at acknowledging and even affirming a "Christian" reading of Isaiah, but he also challenges the church to realize that reading Isaiah through Christian eyes is unfair to the original author and audience. And, in classic Brueggemann style, he does a wonderful job applying the socio-political context of the text to modern political dilemmas, urging us to always strive for the redemptive path.

Brueggeman is excellent as usual in this Isaiah commentary that stands out among the other Westminster commentaries. This commentary has more interesting ideas, helpful information, and a very clear, logical outline for the layperson to follow. Much more accessible than the Isaiah commentaries put out by Interpretation and Word.

This book has an excellent introduction to the political and religious situation of the time. Chapters include New Revised StandardVersion text and topic summaries. "Isaiah 40-66" by Walter Bruggemann is the best book I have found to explain the late pchapters of Isaiah.

I Consider Walter Brueggemann the foremost Bible Interpreter in America. I specially value his great capacity of making the Word of God "available" for today's man and woman.

Concise explanation Helpful and informative.

Excellent as always.
