I really liked this fictionalized story of Jonah from the Bible. The author used the Biblical storyline well, adding good historical writing, and adding his bit of fiction to color in the lines of the story. In the Bible, the book of Jonah is four chapters that tell the story concisely and I liked that I felt I could more fully understand some of the aspects of what happened. There is a romantic angle that, as far as I know, is pure fiction, but it doesn't take away from the value of the Biblical parts that are true. There are a few places in the book that the author describes Assyrian violence toward their enemy that is gruesome and a bit more than I want to imagine. Nevertheless, I believe the descriptions to be accurate, because they were truly a vicious, evil people toward their enemy and I'm sure the actual truth of it was probably even worse. I just don't like to see pictures of that horror in my mind. In spite of that, it DID help me understand even more fully why Jonah was so adamant about not wanting to go and preach to the people of Nineveh. The book helped me to gain some interesting and helpful insights into Jonah and the Assyrian people. I very much liked this book and feel I know much more about Jonah now than I did before I read it.

I completely enjoyed this tale. Not only did I learn about the time of the kings, I feel closer my relationship with God, having a clearer understanding of the type of man and prophet Jonah was, as well as how much of an intricate part his role played during this time.I especially enjoyed how Barbera set the beginning of Jonahs journey integrating the community of the whales. An unusual twist that captured my interest instantly.Barbera brings to us the life of Jonah, a humble man and honored prophet. How his own lessons enhance his understanding of the power of God.The imagery is excellent, leaving me feeling as if I were a part of the book. I was sorry to have the book end. When is the next sequel Anthony?A must read to all who continue their journey of bringing the Lord closer in our lives.I look forward to reading more from this Author and congratulate him on a marvelous journey back to a time some of us may have forgotten.

Wow! It’s so good! Not only did this book get me back into the habit of reading again, but took me on a wild adventure from Gath Hepher, to the sea, to the desert. I know the story of Jonah backwards and forwards; it’s one of my favorite Bible stories. However, this version gave me a different view of the story. It explored Jonah’s character, his family and friends, added depth to the story that most of us only know from text, and reminded me the trip from the sea to Nineveh was not easy for Jonah even if the Bible didn’t mention what the trip was like. It also reminded me that Jonah was never alone, not just because of his fiancé and his friend Amos who was also a prophet, but because God was involved and was protecting him all the way through. On a personal level, this book reminded me the need I had to pray continually at a time when I wasn’t praying that much. It also reminded me that God is not about to leave me in the dust; He’s got me and is going to protect me, just as He did Jonah (hopefully fish aren’t involved this time). It was so good a story that I felt sad finishing up the story. I highly recommend this book. Even if you know the story of Jonah already, like I did, this masterpiece is worth it. Reading it, you’ll either feel like you’re back in the Bible times or that the Bible has come to life around you. God bless you Anthony Barbera, and to all you readers, may God reach you through this story.

When I chose to read Jonah in the time of kings, I was looking for another perspective besides the Sunday school story time version most of us have heard. Although I thought it would be a different view, I was expecting a historically accurate, but boring read. This book did have historically accurate elements but was anything but boring. It was a extremely fresh and imaginative view that was not only entertaining but very helpful in having a better understanding of what Jonah delt with in his trials. I highly recommend this to all.

I thoroughly enjoyed "Jonah, In the Time of the Kings.." It was a very fast read for me, only taking two days to finish (that usually happens with the good ones - I just can't put it down, wanting to know what happens next!). I was transported to a land of long ago with the very first page!! The reality of Jonah's relationship with God was made to live for me. I related to him so well. He was funny; he was bold; he was weak; but he was never intimidated! I loved that about him. Mostly, what I loved about this book was that Mr. Barbera connected me with the prophet. So much went on in my heart as I traveled with Jonah to Nineveh. I was scared with him. I was mad with him. Above all, I felt I was let in on the relationship between the prophet and the Living God! It was a fantastic adventure! Thank you, Mr. Barbera! I enjoyed your book and look forward to reading more. (In fact, I am reading it again!! - So nice, I'm gonna read it twice!!)
