Ebooks Online

In this fresh and expansive work, Ellen Davis offers a comprehensive interpretation of the prophetic role and word in the Christian scriptures. Davis carefully outlines five essential features of the prophetic role and then systematically examines seven representations of prophets and prophecies.Thoroughly theological, Davis's volume provides both instruction and insight for understanding prophecy in Christian tradition and discipleship. This volume concludes with a rich discussion of practical matters, including the relationship between Christian discipleship and prophetic interpretation and the role of biblical prophecy in interfaith contexts.

My note isn't a review - I'm only on page fifty one, though I have read Dr. Davis' other books and hope my first reading can slow down on this new publication, an amazing book as the others have been. It is interesting, intricate theology, often different strands of approach, then the author's own look at an ambiguity. What I've found built into the discussions is the lesson to each of us to let God work through us and not see ourselves as indispensable.Dr. Davis writes with charm and tells an interpretation by a Jewish exegete (p. 47) who explains the difference one letter of a word can make. Moses and Aaron prominently sinned by saying notsi' (shall we draw forth) instead of yotsi' (shall He draw forth).10-19-14 A book I'm thankful for. As I closed Biblical Prophecy, often to be consulted, after reading the final page this aft., I thought of the fuller appreciation of suffering it brings. Of the remarkable pulling together of Islamic studies for better understanding, drawn from her teaching in a class given at Duke Divinity with their Muslim chaplain and her participation in the Building Bridges seminars. Of the general orientation Dr. Davis' books always offer for bringing in what you already have studied and seeing a new continuity.I'm quick to agree with Prof. Brown in his endorsement of Biblical Prophecy. The author in her meticulous clarity has shown the need for such a work as this. With much time and heart given to the Sudan, her own self-effacing demeanor (as in the sense of humility), excellent credentials, she appears God-given on the theological scene.

It is a wonderful book. Ellen Davis is an amazing writer and thinker.

This is good read and blend of Jewish and christian concept of what a prophet should be.
