This is actually a pretty good book to have. As a previous reviewer pointed out, what this book does is it separates 1000 or so Bible verses into different categories. (These categories includes anger, forgiveness, guidance, guilt, lonlieness, mercy, peace, prayer, self denial, worry, and several others.) Even if we read the Good Book fairly often, it is easy to fall into the trap of already knowing the story and not stopping to appreciate some profound and beautiful passages. The really nice thing about this book is that if you are going through a time where one of these categories is applicable to your life, you can easily find Bible verses that apply to your situation. Though interestingly, the prologue of this book says: "It is in no way intended to replace regular Bible study." In fact, this book is probably best read AFTER you have read the Bible. I am not saying you need an encyclopedic knowledge of the Bible to appreciate this book, but you should know if the verses are a proverb on their own (Proverbs), part of a prophecy (Ezekiel or Isaiah), from Jesus himself (Gospels), or from one of Jesus' apostles (Paul's letters). EXAMPLE: In 'lonlieness,' there is a verse from the Gospel According to John. Jesus says: "I will not leave you comfortless..." (John 14:18). Well, many of you probably know that in "John," Jesus said this at the last supper, and that he is talking about the Holy Spirit that will come. It's a very nice book to have. It is just my opinion that you will get more out of it if you already know the context to which the verses come from.
I ordered one of these books for each one of adult kids, neither of which is what would be called 'religious', but both of which appreciate this book. It quotes verses from the King James Version translation. There's quite a bit from the book of Proverbs. Everyone has things they have to deal with and work through in this live; and this is a nice, uplifting little book that could help.I'm in agreement with some of the other reviewers that it would be good to drag out your Bible and read the verses in context. Merely picking out a verse or two from the Bible and basing your entire belief system on those really isn't going to cut it.
I bought these as gifts for the ladies in my Bible Study group and they were so thrilled. This book gives scriptures that are good references for many different types of situations. It's a lot easier than searching and searching through the Bible aimlessly. Though not intended to replace the Bible, these scriptures are a starting place for more intense Bible study.
I keep this book handy whenever I am writing letters and need a quick quote of encouragement. Each section is separated by emotion, etc... and pages of one line to paragraph size scriptures follow.
My husband & I received this as a gift from his mother,which was given to her by a freind at work. I finally had the time to read and enjoy this book thinking I could return the favor to someone else like she did.Maybe this will help a family member or friend of mine. I purchased these books for my Sunday School class. I have had a lot of feed back on how well they enjoyed them, Several of them have stated that they have complete the book from cover to cover.
When your emotions, or life are out-of-control and you can't think of anything Biblical, this is a great resource. Say somebody at church makes you so anagry, or hurt that you are just emotionally swamped. You can look for things like "anger", "forgiveness", or "prayer" and get a short verse or two to hang onto until you calm down.When I'm not all upset, I find browsing the table of contents a good way to study something I've not looked into before. This book has been very helpful for me and many of my friends.
Great book if you need encouragement. It breaks down different areas you may be struggling with such as Faith, Health, Finance, Friends etc and gives you a list of God's promises relating to those areas. I love it and I keep it by my bedside. A must have.
