Thank you Robert Morris for writing this book and clearing up a lot of common misconceptions about the Holy Spirit. Robert addresses the topic head on that so many pastors are reluctant to talk about. I've spent my whole life in church but don't recall a pastor ever going into depth about the Holy Spirit, The Holy Spirit's reason for being, the Holy Spirit's role in the trinity and all the promises and benefits that are available to Christians who want to grow in their relationship with Him. Robert builds each chapter on a solid foundation of scripture and teaches so many things that I never heard or saw before in the scriptures. Robert's style is funny, engaging and informative. I have a new favorite teacher! Can't wait to read more books written by Robert Morris. I led a woman's Bible Study using this book and the DVD and I can honestly say it was life changing for so many of us. Thank you Robert for sharing the truth about the Holy Spirit. This book was apparently written from an excellent series of sermons that Robert did called My Best Friend -- The Holy Spirit. You can find them on the Gateway church website. Each of these sermons corresponds to particular chapters in the book:Sermon #1: "Who Is He?" corresponds to Chapters 1-4Sermon #2: "Is He A Person?" corresponds to Chapters 5 - 7Sermon #3: "Is He Penecostal?" corresponds to Chapters 8 - 9Sermon #4: "Does He Baptize?" corresponds to Chapters 10 - 12Sermon #5: "Is He Charismatic?" corresponds to Chapters 13 - 16Sermon #6: "Does He Speak In Tongues?" corresponds to Chapters 17 - 20Along with the sermons online, there are discussion note outlines and discussion questions that you can print out to correspond with each sermon.
First a disclaimer, I lived in Texas for several years (I've moved since) and I went to Gateway Church for many years (I was there when the church services were in the basement of a school, and when we built the first building in Southlake.) Robert is perhaps the most gifted preacher I have ever heard. It has been my experience that some of the best preachers don't make the transition into writing smoothly, and I place Robert in that category. (Although his "Blessed Life" book is excellent.)I guess what I am saying is that before you fully judge the book, you should probably pop over to GatewayPeoplecom and listen/watch the series there (which you can do for free.)As for the book, it tackles an important subject, which is usually neglected, and does it in a very approachable way. A lot of Christians who may find the Holy Spirit "scary" can read this book and have their fears relieved. As the other reviewers have said, this happens in the first half of the book, and it does so very well. For that alone, this book is worth reading.I get the feeling though, that it is missing a part. It feels like it ended too soon without really getting into the details of how to develop and foster this relationship. As someone who lived through the explosive growth of Gateway church, I can attest first hand to the fact that Robert is not pretending here... I believe he has the kind of relationship with the Holy Spirit that he details in the book... I'm not sure that the reader comes away with a firm understanding of how they can get that for themselves -- but I am not completely sure that is a fault of the book.Relationships have to be built one step at a time. Reading a book on marriage won't give you a great marriage, after all.
