Downstairs the Queen Is Knitting is Dorcas Smucker's brand new chronicle of family life with six fast-growing up kids. Downstairs the Queen Is Knitting follows Dorcas' two earlier and beloved collections, "Upstairs the Peasants Are Revolting" and "Ordinary Days." The kids are a bit older now, and Dorcas and Paul's marriage is longer and deeper. But Dorcas sees with more disarming clarity than ever, and she writes piercingly about life on and off the grass farm as the kids move toward more independence. Downstairs the Queen Is Knitting will entertain you, and ultimately it will soothe your soul.

The only problem with finishing Dorcas Smucker's latest book is now I'll have to wait for her next one. In this third collection of stories from her life, she uses honest threads of grief and illness alongside brighter colors from cheerful days. The contrasting hues form a lovely, meaningful whole. Dorcas actively cares about her husband, children, cats, and a very large dog, but her concerns reach beyond their home and land to the rest of the world. While reading, I imagined picking blackberries just up the Smuckers' road or splashing through Muddy Creek. But even more, I felt grounded in my own spaces, reminded of my own life challenges and quests for meaning. I appreciate the way Dorcas quietly calls me to appreciate being right where I am, navigating the joys and trials of an ordinary life.

Dorcas Smuckers Downstairs the Queen is Knitting is the perfect book to read when life just isn't going the way one wants it to. When I was feeling down I picked a chapter to read and always, when finished, felt great. Just reading the stories she told of family life made my day brighter somehow...happier.I thoroughly recommend this book for anyone who wants to read about a wonderful family that clearly loves each other and about a mother that made that happen.Jeanne

This is a great book. I love her style of writing. She is funny, and writes about true life things. She includes both the serious and the humerus. Each chapter is a story or subject of its own, and I like that. I own all of her books so far, and I hope that she keeps on writing!Susie Schrock
