My son Ben, who is about to go into 2nd grade, calls this his favorite book of all time. He is especially fond of the illustrations - and we have even decided that we should frame the dustcover! That is a pretty ringing endorsement from a 7 year old!We plan to buy all of the books in the "Mouse" series over the next year. Perhaps we will buy them in order of seasons/holidays.
This book does not have any story line. A mouse falls into a backpack and ends up in an elementary school. He sees blocks, a toy car, a drum, books, dolls, plants, crayons, snacks, a hat, toy pots, and then two children. Each item has a few sounds or an adjective; “squiggle, scribble, dot crayons,” “feathery, floppy, boppy hats, “, but that is all. There is no story line, no plot, no adventure, and no emotions. That is it. The book is beautifully illustrated, large colorful pictures, and very little text. I would call this ‘A Picture Book’, definitely not a storybook. The saddest part of all is that my review is almost twice as long as this book.
I bought this book to help prepare my niece for starting preschool. I first previewed starting\going to preschool books at the library and found that most focused on a child care type setting: the children attended a full day; they participated in activities such as lunch and nap time; etc. Since my niece will be attending preschool just a few mornings a week, "Mouse's First Day of School" was the best fit for us. I recommend sharing this book with other children who are starting preschool on a "part time" basis.
There are several other "Mouse" books that we have liked (Winter, Autumn, etc.) but this title is very misleading - it has NOTHING to do really with Mouse going to school. There's hardly any text and therefore hardly any story and its essentially just Mouse playing with some school supplies but no story or context. Its the first Mouse book that I'll donate away.
Preschoolers liked listening and the pictures were good. It was a good choice for first day of school for the little ones.
I bought this book to prepare my 3-year-old for preschool. While the pictures are cute and colorful, it is not written for her age (maybe for a one-yr-old). Not much content at all to explain to her what school is all about. I think we read it once or twice, and she hasn't asked to look at it again. Go with "DW's Guide to Preschool" instead - you won't be disappointed.
Eh, this one wasn't as good as her others. Kids will probably still like it because it's light on words and the pictures are pretty good.
